If you haven't seen the US Bombs at a show, you're missing out. Have you ever wondered how much a singer could drink... and still sing?
I saw the US Bombs at a Swingin' Utters (by the way, a very good band) show at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, along with the Stiches (LA) and One Many Army (also, a good band). Old skater, Duane Peters was drunk and still drinking prior to, and during their set. He was staggering and falling over on the stage, but he managed to keep the mic up and sing, and not too bad, considering he's got a snotty, sneering Sex Pistols-ish vocal tone.
I was at the show taking photos for New Red Archives, a punk label in
San Francisco (released the first Swingin' Utters album), and I was in the middle front row. I had never seen the US Bombs before, but I had a couple of the album and I like them. But during the Bombs set, I was pretty amazed at the pounding Peters gave himself. During the set, he fell into a half-stack, knocking it over (a bouncer had to help him up), fell down several times, and fell off the stage (he actually knocked a camera out of my hand) hitting the metal barriers. Every time he fell, I swear I thought he was going to pass out or hurt himself so badly that the show would stop. But, he was like a machine. He would fall, grab the mic, sing (lying down if he couldn't get up), and go on.
Crazy! Go see them.
Regarding the US Bombs sound, they sound kind of like a mix between the Sex Pistols and the Clash. They are a modern-day '77 style band, with some fast to mid-tempoed songs. Duane's vocal is partly slurred and overly-enuciated at the end of each verse, similar to old British punk bands. The guitars are melodic, and old school, slightly poppy, with an dirty edge.
If you are interested in checking the US Bombs out on CD or LP, I would suggest their earlier material, like "Garibaldi Guard," "Never Mind The Opened Minds," and "War Birth."
