Getting Warped With Green Day
Oct 11 '00
I saw Green Day at the 2000 Warped Tour at Suffolk Downs in Boston, MA. They had been headlining the tour until this date when the Mighty Mighty Bosstones were allowed to close in their hometown. Although the Bosstones stole the show by playing to the Boston crowd, Green Day's performance was every bit as powerful.
I stood fairly close to the stage awaiting the punk band's arrival. But the second they hit that first chord of "Welcome To Paradise," the crowd went insane and I was pushed to the back. My view wasn't as good anymore, but the show was incredible.
They played all the favorites - "Geek Stink Breath," "Hitchin a Ride," and of course, "Basketcase." They even invited a random fan onstage to play guitar with them during an Operation Ivy cover. It was a gamble not knowing how talented the kid was, but that trust was a fine example of Green Day's respect for their fans.
After the show, they lit the drums on fire in a classic act of rock anarchy. The music was great, and getting tossed around in the wavepool of people added to the experience, making the condensed concert a show I will never forget.
