Where Are My Pants?
Jul 04 '00
Man, it's taken me 6 months to finally get around to writing this. So here I am. All alone on a deserted island. I'm really hungry and a bit horny, but what am I supposed to do? Rocks and coconuts don't provide much relief. But enough about my problems; Here are 10 Punk Rock albums that I choose to bring on this island with me. My Punk tastes are a bit distorted, so don't be surprised if you see a little Ska or Hardcore included. Also, these are listed in no particular order:
Start Today by the Gorilla Biscuits- What would I do without a little Old School Hardcore/Punk? These sXe demons, lead by Civ, blasted through the late-1980's and proved their point, while gaining an impressive fan base. Songs such as my personal favorite, "New Direction", showed us a positive yet angry outlook on life with fast punk/hardcore and Civ's screeching vocals.
17 Reasons... by Link 80- This Berkeley, CA Punk/Ska band is essential to every Punk fans collection. Nick's screaming vocals and deep lyrics along with fast catchy Punk, upbeat Ska, and driving horns make 17 Reasons... necessary for my solitary situation.
Let's Go by Rancid- I will never forget my first encounter with this wonderful record; I was in seventh grade, and some kid sitting next to me on the bus told me to listen to this band called Rancid. I remember listening and thinking damn, this is really cool. Ever since, this catchy, fast, and legendary Punk Rock record has earned a place at the top of my charts.
Complete Discography by Minor Threat- Although in my beliefs vocalist Ian MacKay has taken a gigantic plunge with his current band Fugazi, D.C. Hardcore/Punk act Minor Threat has survived within its genre as legendary. They were one of the forefathers of the Straight-Edge Movement in the early 1980's, and proved their ways by singing about anti-drug and anti-violence issues. I could listen to this fast and powerful record all day, as it never seems to bring me down.
Slapstick by Slapstick- This record by far presides as my favorite Ska/Punk album of all time. The album is basically a discography, and contains practically every song they recorded in their short history. Brendan's catchy vocals and thoughtful lyrics about issues such as being young and being independent lead the music along with fast and catchy Ska/Punk with horns.
The Clash by The Clash- What would a Punk Rock collection be without one of the pioneering Punk bands themselves? This record brings me back and proves to me what a real Punk band should sound like. This inspiring and positive album contains nothing but pure, rich, smooth Punk with an occasional touch of Ska. Essential to my top 10, and yours.
Die For Your Government by Anti Flag- Quite possibly the only "fashion Punk" band I can tolerate. Why? Anti Flag brought the sound to a different level, not singing about drinking and drugs and being a dork like your typical street punk band these days. Anti Flag explains to us why our government is becoming so corrupt, and also, in their own subtle ways, tend to trash the kids who get drunk and ruin our shows and destroy the Punk Scene. Although I don't believe in everything the band stands for, I respect them more then any other band for their perseverance and their witty lyrics. They put on a stunning live show, too. I would not be caught deserted anywhere without this CD.
The Struggle Continues... by Link 80- Yes, here they are again. Link 80 returned with some dynamite with this release in February, 2000. With a new vocalist, this album shows a strong maturity in their music, with the same passion from their music we loved before. The fast Punk/Ska and driving horn lines make this album one of my all time favorites.
White Trash, Two Heebs, and A Bean by NOFX- This album made this list solely because it's funny. As in most of NOFX's work, this record contains witty and hysterical lyrics along with fast Pop-Punk rhythms. Such topics as a woman who turns bisexual and the pot seed planting Johnny Appleseed are all I need for some wholesome, friendly amusement while deserted on this island.
Operation Ivy by Operation Ivy- A classic. This would most likely be #1 on my list if I decided to put them in order, but you can all deal without. One of the most influential and powerful Ska/Punk bands to ever roam this planet, Operation Ivy made history with their powerful political lyrics and yells out to brotherhood and unity, while playing astounding music as well. This record contains almost every song they ever recorded, and proves to us exactly why they left the stage as legends.
There you go. My personal top 10 Punk Rock albums of all time. How does that make you feel?
I'm still hungry.
