Pop goes the weaselSep 17, 2000 (Updated Sep 22, 2000) Write an essay on this topic.Hmmm. This is a tough question to answer. For the most part I think they each influenced pop culture in different ways. I would certainly vote either John Lennon or Elvis as having the most overall influence on any pop culture. However since the question was regarding contemporary pop culture I would have to cast my vote to 2pac or Kurt Cobain. They are the icons of today's pop culture. Many teenagers do not even seem to know who John Lennon, Bob Marley, or Jerry Garcia were(though of course they're all familiar with Cherry Garcia ice cream.) While these three (and Elvis) all impacted culture in a major way I do not believe they have much influence on current pop culture. 2pac and Kurt have both had a huge impact on today's pop world, and I think you would be hard pressed to find someone with a radio or TV who has not heard of them. While I won't argue that the influence of our great icons of the past doesn't still linger, I believe that most people of the younger generation don't feel any link to these icons. The current makers of pop culture have grown up in such a different world that the things these artists stood for and sung about don't connect with them the way it did with their parents or even older siblings. They can connect with the unsatisfied and disconnected feelings of Grunge/Alternative/Whatever or understand the life stories present in 2pac's lyrics better than they connect with the icons of the past. Kurt Cobain and 2pac, in my opinion at least, have become more closely tied to current pop culture than the other four, great though they may be. |
