Would you want to be on a Desert Island with me?

Mar 20 '00

The music I listen to would probably drive you crazy. This is really kind of pointless, but if you really want to know those discs I hold precious and dear, read on...

Albums, top-ten in reverse alphabetical order: (too heavy on the classic rock)

"Innervisions" - Stevie Wonder

"Who's Next" - The Who

"Donde Estan Los Ladrones" - Shakira

"Murmur" - R.E.M.

"Dark Side of the Moon" - Pink Floyd (obvious choice)

"Pa Otro L'ao" - Chichi Peralta
I reviewed this one. It's an amazing album which you probably haven't heard of if you don't speak Spanish and don't live in Latin America, but it's just an amazing album.

"Blue" - Joni Mitchell

"What's Going On" - Marvin Gaye

"Gilded Palace of Sin" - Flying Burrito Brothers (cool name)

"Unhalfbricking" - Fairport Convention (really cool band)

"Pet Sounds" - Beach Boys (another obvious choice)

Hmm, I think that's 11. How very Spinal Tap. Anyway, that's just today's list. In fact, if I was stranded on a desert island I would get sick of these albums VERY quickly. In fact, I'm already sick of a lot of these. I haven't listened to "Dark Side of the Moon" since high school, for instance.

Actually, I had to make a "desert island disc" choice once. A few years ago I spent 9 months on the road traveling in South America. I had to choose, for space reasons, about ten tapes. They were good tapes, the best mixes I'd ever made. Still, I've barely listened to any of them since, so overplayed did they become.

10 Hits Packages I'd highly recommend (because some artists focus on singles): (in no particular order)

"The Dionne Warwick Collection" - Dionne Warwick
This 24 song collection put out by Rhino with this really bad colorized foto of Ms. Warwick on the cover. Excellent collection. Sublime!

"On the Radio, vol. 1 & 2" - Donna Summer
The best and only anthology to buy for Ms. Summer, it has all her disco hit, cleverly mixed together for one non-stop dance party. I listen to it while cleaning my apartment. Can't Stop the Music!

"Immaculate Collection" - Madonna

"Chronicle" - Creedence Clearwater Revival

"Los 20 Exitos" - Sui Generis
Before Argentine Rock God Charly Garcia started jumping off 9 story balconies into swimming pools on coke-fueled terrors, he made some of the best classic rock ever.

any collection of Gilda
Santa Gilda, the perished queen of Argentine Cumbia. Made famous after her tragic death in a 1997 bus accident, Gilda has a voice so sweet and heartbreaking it's almost enough to make you forget the canned beats and cheap synthesizers. "Cuantas noches vacias, Cuantas horas perdidas..."

"The Man and his Music" - Sam Cooke

"Way to Blue" - Nick Drake
Music to slit your wrists by.

"Greatest 1971-1975" - Eagles

-----------------------------------------------------------

Here's a list of Perfect Pop Songs

"God only knows" - Beach Boys

"A Change Gonna Come" - Sam Cooke (those strings give me chills, and that voice!)

"California Dreaming" - The Mamas & The Papas

"A Day in the Life" - The Beatles

"Maybe I'm Amazed" - Paul McCartney

"I Want You Back" - Jackson 5

"Billie Jean" - Michael Jackson

"Go West" - Pet Shop Boys (I get teary eyed every time I hear it)

"Ciega Sordomuda" - Shakira

"Dock of the Bay" - Otis Redding

"Love Hangover" - Diana Ross (I don't need no cure!)

"I Want it That Way" - Backstreet Boys (seriously, it's a great song)

Finally, one classical piece I just couldn't do without:

"Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis" - Ralph Vaughn Williams
