I first saw, and heard, Andrea Bocelli last year - on Dateline, or 60 Minutes. He actually did very little singing; it was more of an interview, on how he had reached the heights of his career - still young, blind since childhood. At the time, I remember being stunned by the beauty of his voice. But it was just a couple short snippets, barely a tease, and my attention must have been somewhat diluted by reading - my most common accompaniment to TV watching.
I saw him again a few weeks ago. But this time I HEARD him. Complete arias! And with my complete attention. It was the most captivating experience; I literally was transcended - without wanting to sound corny, the clarity and beauty of his classic operatic voice moved me to a place of pure joy. It really does transcend whatever I'm doing and thinking at the time. His voice fills the air with such flawless beauty. And while I love almost all kinds of music, I'm definitely not an opera buff, and classical music is what I put on most often when I want to "just feel good". But, I'll say it - "I don't know opera; I just know what I like".
The CD I finally found, just two weeks ago, "Sacred Arias", falls outside of the "I like this" category. It goes far beyond it. Listening to this man's voice has to be done while not reading the paper, or even straightening up the living room, (usually times I put my favorite music on). When I listen to Andrea Bocelli, I create the environment to actually EXPERIENCE his flawless singing. It is emotionally moving, each and every time I've listened to this CD - which has been every day for the last two weeks.
Christmas songs on it? Why not? 3 versions of "Ave Maria"? Wish there were more! This CD is so perfectly titled. The music this artist, Andrea Bocelli creates with his flawless voice IS sacred. The Latin hymns, the Italian arias - it matters not whether I can translate them all in my head (just Adeste Fideles, remembered from childhood Midnight Mass). I have yet to experience such beauty in the human voice, as well as such inner peace, as his voice creates, from any music ever - and that is saying quite a bit. I'm definitely not of his generation. He is magnificent.
