Can't live without Hip-Hop
Nov 20 '00
It would be tough to narrow all of hip-hop down to 10 great albums, but I'll give it a shot...in no particular order here they are:
1. De La Soul - Three Feet High and Rising - it's fun to listen to and has no bad songs.
2. Del the Funkee Homosapien - I Wish My Brother George was Here - Del's first album, contains some great George Clinton and Donald Byrd samples, once again, no bad songs.
3. Cut Chemist and DJ Shadow - Brainfreeze - This isn't really an album, more of a mix tape. Two great DJ's spinning hip-hop, funk, soul and jazz. I have owned this for over a year and still listen to it all the time.
4. A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory - Very jazzy samples, fun to listen to, Q-Tip's greatest work
5. Ugly Duckling - The Fresh Mode EP - Eight fantastic songs, real underground hip-hop with an old school feel.
6. Pete Rock and CL Smooth - Mecca and the Soul Brother - A Classic, contains three of my favorite hip-hop songs of all time...it doesn't get any better than "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)"
7. Jurassic 5 - The J5 EP - Excellent album, some more fantastic underground stuff with an old school feel.
8. Blackalicious - Melodica EP - This one is tough to find, but I think is being reissued now. Blackalicious is underground hip-hop at it's very best.
9. Atmosphere - Ford One and Ford Two - actually two EPs, but if you put them together they are about as long as an album. They have not stood the test of time yet, but I think they will. The only drawback is that I have only seen them on vinyl, no CDs yet. So I guess you just have to go buy a turntable.
10. Boogie Down Productions - Edutainment - Intelligent hip-hop, great lyrics that make you think along with nice samples and KRS-ONE's excellent delivery.
