THE LIST OF ALL LISTS!!!

Mar 29 '00

If I was stranded on a deserted island with only 10 tapes (not CD's- I'm just that old school), I couldn't live without the classics listed on this page. Read and enjoy, then if you don't have any of these, I suggest picking them up right away, going home, locking yourself in your room and let the home-schooling begin!

10 - De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising
The first album from this Long Island trio is arguably their best, although De La Soul is Dead is also a hot item. I love this album, definitely one of my favorites because it's before the gun waving era and actually speaks peace. Listen to the whole album but you'll go back to "Buddy", "Potholes in My Lawn" and others continually.

9- Eric B. & Rakim - Paid in Full
Also the first album from another LI duo. This is probably considered the ultimate classic by hip hop heads. Songs from this 1986 album are still being played in clubs today. "Eric B for President", "I Ain't No Joke", "My Melody", "I Know You Got Soul.... come on, need I say more?

8- Nas - Illmatic
When this album dropped in early 1994, it was billed as "The most anticipated album in rap history". Although, this album is short (45 minutes, it packs a lot of punch. Rappers are still sampling lyrics from this album including the Lox and JayZ very recently. Check out every song on this album, Nas never gets better than this on anything after.

7- JayZ - Reasonable Doubt
The ability to be street and somewhat commercial has been perfected by JayZ in the past few years, and this is where it all began. You've all probably heard "Ain't no N!##a", but check out every song album, probably his best work and most unrecognized.

6- Notorious B.I.G. - Ready To Die
You can't make a top ten list and not include this one. Certainly one of the greatest albums of all time, as it tells the story of a young black kid growing up in the ghetto. Another album where every song is great, Biggie is the king of lyrics and the greatest rapper of all time, this is where he proves it.

5- Redman - Whut? Thee Album
In the P-funk rap era of the early nineties, this one stands out. Redman is untouchable with his blunt-smoking, no-love-for-the-ho's style. He's a member of EPMD's Hit Squad and that shows on this album, great beats and raw lyrics. Check out "Watch Yo Nuggets", "Supaman Luva" as well as many other jams to crack a 40 and laugh to.

4- Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet
Chuck D's voice is great and Flav comes in with humorous phrases throughout the whole album, while Terminator X tears up the ones and twos. This album is very pro-black and might scare off some listeners, with songs like "Burn Hollywood Burn" and "Fight the Power" but nonetheless, this is a must have in anyone's rap collection.

3- A Tribe Called Quest - A Low End Theory
One of the first albums that united the ghetto and the suburbs, is definitely in my top ten. QTIP as the lead on this group's sophomore album really comes into his own with great lyrics over dope beats. Everyone knows "Scenario" but I suggest "Check the Rhyme" and "The Jazz", overall a great album.

2- Brand Nubian - All For One
Another extremely pro-black album that might scare away some listeners, but the beats and lyrics are too good to not have it in my top ten. Grand Puba takes the lead in most songs and does so well that he decides to go solo in the next year ( not a good move). This one is hot though, check out "Step to the Rear", "All for One", and "Slow Down", you'll love every single moment!

1- Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the 36 Chambers
This album totally revolutionized rap into what it is today. Making stars out of all of it's members, this group comprised of 9 rappers(some who had failed in the past), set the trend for what we hear on the radio and underground today. Check out "CREAM", "Shame on a N!##A" and my favorite "Protect ya Neck". Hot!!!

I know I left out a few notables, nothing from EPMD, Run DMC or other originators. I also didn't include any new acts, DMX, Eminem, or any West Cost Rappers, NWA or it's members, Snoop, etc... Hey, sorry, I'm a fan of all of them (except DMX) but I was only allowed to list 10!!
