R.E.M. is THE supergroup of the last 20 years. They have found popularity with many different ages and with people who tend to identify with different music genres as well. They blend a new alternative sound with classic rock and even touch upon old lounge as well, with "At My Most Beautiful," where no guitars are used. Only the vocal, piano, and bass are used for a laid-back, touching love song. R.E.M. can, at this point, do whatever they want, because true R.E.M. fans will love it, for the members are sheer musical genius. Their latest album, "Up," completely changed their sound from their previous release, "New Adventures In Hi-Fi." New Adventures offered an edgier, more guitar-driven approach, while Up is very laid back, and, with the exception of "Lotus," is fairly soft. I now own each R.E.M. studio album, from Murmur (1983), to Up (1998). My favorite album is probably Up, with Automatic For The People in at a close second. I would probably list my top 5 like this:
1. Up
2. Automatic For The People
3. New Adventures In Hi-Fi
4. Life's Rich Pageant
5. Out of Time
Although other bands would be unfairly compared to R.E.M. (since they're my favorite band), I enjoy many other genres of music, as I own at least one CD from each decade dating back to the music of the 20s. If you like the music of R.E.M., I would recommend also listening to the band Radiohead. They have that alternative feel sometimes even more-so than R.E.M. Tom Petty is my second favorite singer, but he is not a whole lot like R.E.M., in that he is a classic rocker. Queen (yes, Queen) is an amazing band, that people either love or hate. The late Queen albums bear a small resemblance to the music of R.E.M. This is why the last Queen studio album with the late, great Freddie Mercury (aka Farookh Bulsara), is thought of (by me) as ranking at the top of the great Queen albums, right along with "A Night at the Opera," "News of the World," and "The Game." But, although all these bands are great, none can compare with R.E.M. They are truly, as any true R.E.M. fan can agree, in a league of their own.
