While the Aphex Twin,(Richard D. James, Universal Indicator, Caustic Window, Polygon Window,etc..)might have given up on making albums, those that he's put out are mind-blowing. From his early days in Caustic Window and his repetitive grating sounds to the complicated brilliance of his latest single Windowlicker, he has always been on his own branch of music evolution. He truly deserves to be known as the musical genius of the 90s.
One album which deserves more attention than it is getting is 'Selected Ambient Works 85-92'. From the beauty of the first track this album is electronic music at its best. While not strictly 'ambient' with its drum beats and bass lines, don't be discouraged. The music is great, with "Green Calx" and "Tha" among my favourites. "Green Calx" brings together very 'eighties' synth sounds and spooky shouts and voices, while "Tha" has great keyboard work over sounds Richard recorded of people scraping dirt with shovels and talking at their workplace. Very cool, very good to listen to.
Also cool is the Aphex Twin 'A' symbol on the front cover of the album. The 'A' symbol has got to be the best icon ever created.
This album is definately one of my favourites of all time, and is recommended to anyone interested enough in Aphex Twin to read this review.
