10 Rap albums that move me!

Dec 22 '00 (Updated Jul 06 '01)

The Bottom Line A collection of music for people with BIG subs in their ride.

This is my second attempt at a top 10 albums list. I will admit that as I have grown older my musical taste have changed. I don't listen to nearly as much rap music as I did when I was younger. Keep that in mind as you read this, most of my favorite rap albums are from "back in the day".

I can't rate these in numerical countdown fashion, so here they are in no particular order:

Sir-Mix-A-Lot - SWASS
Mix-A-Lot's first album. This was released in 1988, it is about as far from "gangsta" as you can get with the possible exception of Hip Hop Soldier. Mostly the raps are about how much money that he and his "posse" make, how much gold they have, what kind of cars they drive, and Seattle. This is an album used to cruise around town with... the only thing offensive on this album is the bass in Posse On Broadway! They even have a song called Iron Man that they made with Metal Church, it has samples from the original Black Sabbath song of the same title. Favorite Song: Posse On Broadway

2 Live Crew - As Nasty As They Wanna' Be
Yes this album is degrading. All about sex and various perversions. It does have very catchy beats and it is funny! Not for the faint of heart or easily offended. I have had this album since it came out in 1989. At the age of 17 I had no problem blaring the obcene language as I rode down the street. Now, I blush with it at low volume in the car by myself. Still, it IS one of my favorite albums, maybe more because of the times it reminds me of than the music itself. Favorite Song: The F&%K Shop

MC Chazsey Chess and MC Cool Rock - Boot the Booty
"Ain't Nothin but tooty fruity, get on the floor if you got that booty... BOOM". Cheesy lyrics, and mediocre music define this album, BUT there are two songs that make this album worthwhile. The title track is just about a "fine female" that had "nothing but boot the boot the boot booty". The only other song worth mentioning is Creep Dog, its defining feature is the skull warping bass. This is the perfect album for cruising with a pair of 15 inch woofers in the hatchback! Favorite Song: Creep Dog

The Bass Patrol - Rock This Planet
I have searched high and low for this CD (I have the 11 year old tape). The best I could do was a couple of greatest hits and Napster. Sadly, Rock This Planet is very scarce these days. If you bought it in the late 80's though, you have yourself another album that was produced for cruising with the 15's. Bass Patrol's low beats and "robotic" vocals created and album that is good for little else. This is not dance music... it is "chillin in the ride" music at its best. Favorite Song: Fakin No Moves

Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet
Flavor Flav gets on my nerves, but Chuck D is awesome! Everything on this album is politically based (isn't all PE stuff?). 911 Is A Joke is blatant critisizm of the emergency medical services. Burn Hollywood Burn features Ice Cube and Big Daddy Kane, it is just as critical of the film industry, specifically the roles being offered to black actors. This album has great rythms and powerful lyrics. It is a deviation from my previous selections, this is more of an agressive workout type album. There are very few songs on this one that I don't like! Favorite Song: Burn Hollywood Burn

Beastie Boys - License to Ill
Love it! This was a novelty when I was in the 9th grade! 3 White guys rapping?! They also played rock and roll? The Beastie Boys were the mid 80's Limp Bizkit! They were going somewhere nobody else had been. Fight For Your Right (to Party) became and anthem for teenagers everywhere! The songs on this album describe robbery (both perpatrator and victim) to just plain party music. This is a feel good album that everyone will love to hear at a party. Favorite Song: Paul Revere

Ice-T - OG (Original Gangsta)
Does Ice-T have a smooth voice or what? Most of his raps are "hardcore" about drugs and violence. The Tower is about a prison inmates first day at his new home. The most famous track from this album is New Jack Hustler from the movie New Jack City, it is about the life and death of a drug dealer. Ice-T claims that his raps are from the streets... I hope I never travel down those streets! Favorite Song: New Jack Hustler

LL Cool J - Walking With a Panther
This album has Going Back to Cali on it! I love LL's ability. He has a smooth voice and he can lay down lyrics faster than most people can think! This album is hard to classify... it can be listened to while driving or at a party. This is more of an album for just plain listening too. Favorite Song: I'm That Type of Guy

DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince - He's The DJ, I'm The Rapper
Parents Just Don't Understand! Finally, a song from someone that understands my life as a teenage male! So what if I wreck the car, I HAD to take it or my friends would have thought I wasn't cool! This album is just FUN, their is a parity song called Nightmare on My Street that describes Will's experiences with Freddie Kruger! There is a song for rattling the windows on this album, Pump Up the Bass has the mind numbing low frequencies that seem to be a trademark of the albums on this list! Favorite Song: Parents Just Don't Understand

Dr. Dre - The Chronic
I believe this is Dr. Dre's first album after NWA. I know it is the debut of Snoop Doggy Dogg. This album just has a groovy, laid back sound that makes your head bob. Dr. Dre went with some new styles on this album, including the "whiney organ sound" for lack of a better description. I can listen to this one over and over! Favorite Song: Dre Day

Well, there they are... of course these albums probably wouldn't be near as much fun without big woofers. I doubt they are going to sound the same through headphones. Oh well, maybe I can make some 15's out of coconuts!

Honorable Mentions:
Eazy E - Easy Duz It
Digital Underground - Sex Packets
NWA - 100 Miles and Runnin' and Straight Outta' Compton
