Okay, I admit it. I'm a sucker for musicals [and the music composed for them].
In my rapidly growing collection of CDs and MP3s, I find myself returning again and again to CDs like Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Cameron Mackintosh's Hey Mr. Producer, a compilation of show music composed and written for his many of the shows (Oliver!, Cats, The Phantom of the Opera, etc.) he has produced over the years.
Ten years ago I would not have been caught dead owning or admitting to owning music such as this. High school peer pressure taught me that Slayer and Megadeath were much more peer-friendly forms of musical tastes. I didn't enjoy music much until I got to college and was able to experiment with my musical preferences and discover new likes and dislikes.
Hey Mr. Producer, The Musical World of Cameron Mackintosh consists of 52 songs and four introductions on a two-CD set. Everything from "Pick a Pocket" and "Food Glorious Food" from Oliver! to "Memory" from Cats. Music from other shows like My Fair Lady, Little Shop of Horrors, Godspell, Miss Saigon, and Les Miserables is also well represented.
For the musical lover this CD compilation is one of the best. Performed live for Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh on June 8, 1998, this live recording is a must-have that will continue to remind you if the shows you attended, and those that you missed.
The only negative thing about this compilation is the audience's sometime misplaced laughter that interrupts the performance and inevitably makes its way onto the recording.
Still, Hey Mr. Producer! is an excellent addition top any music collection.
