Pop Music Throughout the Years

Jul 17 '00

'Pop.' What a short word to describe a vast, amazing category of music. Ever since I was young, I have been attracted to many kinds of music- dabbling for a while with R&B, Latin, Country, Rock, Christian Pop, and even for a little while, Rap. But over all, Pop music always stood out in a way. Pop music includes many different styles, many different takes on a good dance beat and catchy lyrics. When I heard "Top 10 Pop Vocal Albums of All Time," I thought of what a long way Pop has come in the last 25 years. What music I loved when I was young, and what music makes me dance that's on the radio right now.

Number one wasn't hard though. My all-time favorite has always been The Carpenders- The Greatest Hits. I love all their albums, in fact, but if your only going to get one it might as well be this one. It's great because it has all the best songs, and it makes you remember being there at her concert and thinking how nice Karen Carpender's waist looked and then hearing the tragic news that she died of anorexia (and you saying miserably "..and I thought she looked thin and nice..").

Number two would have to be Diana Ross- Touch Me in the Morning. Everyone, at some point in their lives, could use a little bit of Diana to brighten their day.

Number three is another oldie: Jim Croche- The Greatest Hits. Oh wow, the more I think about it the more I realize how many days I sat with my ear glued to the stereo singing along with his songs.

Number four is one that is still regularly at my house: The Beach Boys- Endless Summer (certain young ones are addicted to their music today).

Number five is a soundtrack from a movie; Jonathan Livingston- The Seagull. All I can say is that the soundtrack is better than the movie (if that says much).

Number six is popular today, but I couldn't help become addicted after I first heard their hit song on the radio. No Strings Attached, by *Nsync, is a wonderful album with great singers and supurb accominement. The downside of this album is its truly addicting- it won't come out of the CD player (and people might tease you about falling in love with their music).

Number seven is The Beatles (who can resist?) Abbey Road. Who could forget this piece of work?

Number eight is a not very popular album- although recent, not many teens have ever been attracted to All Saints (album entitled All Saints as well). I don't see why not. A wonderful creation by British teens, I can't stop myself from singing along with all their songs.

Number nine is the unforgetable Fleetwood Mac (debut album also entitled none other but Fleetwood Mac). You have to listen to understand.

Number ten is a Disney sound track of the movie The Lion King (by Elton John). AMAZING movie, by the way, for a cartoon! Touching as well, as the album is. The music is like none other. I wish I didn't have to stop- that I could just keep writing my favorites again and again. But if I was stranded on a desert island, in my CD case would be these- sometimes your ears need a little treat now and then, too.
