Jawbreaker was a San Francisco punk/emo band that was on the fast rise in the indie scene, only to finally end with an major label record called "Dear You," on Geffen Records (There was a recent live album released on Blackball called "Live 4-30-96"). When people talk about the "emo" scene, they will probably mention Jawbreaker in conversation at one point, along with Fugazi, the Rites of Spring, and Sunny Day Real Estate, Hot Water Music (post-hardcore). Jawbreaker was punk (melodic-hardcore) in sound with melodic, and sometime chaotic riffs, with gruffy (and later soft-sung)lead vocals, sung by guitarist and songwriter Blake Schwarzenbach (somewhat of a legend today), who now plays guitar and sings in a band called Jets to Brazil (also very good, I highly recommend them). Jawbreaker lyrics are thoughtful, introspective, and slightly dark.
You won't be able to find the Geffen record in stores anymore, I'm not quite sure why. But, if you're not a current Jawbreaker fan, but would like to get a sample taste, I would recommend trying to get "Dear You," (the poppiest, and best sound production - it got modern rock radio play) and "24 Hour Revenge Therapy" (a bit heavier, gruffer vocals, but awesome songs, classic Jawbreaker).
If you are a Jawbreaker fan, you must have the other albums "Unfun" and "Bivouac."
