Joie/Dead Blonde Girlfriend: Rock and Roll Tragedy

Sep 24 '00

"He only plays 3 chords."

"He's a Ramones fan, he only has to play 3 chords."

My friend gave me one of those looks. She can deal with almost all of my musical taste, with the exclusion of my recent passion for folk punk. Of course, this passion is only recent because before the internet, I couldn't find any of this genre. Anti-folk, folk punk, acoustic punk, whatever you decide to call it, this form of music is brutal, powerful, and strong. And the most powerful of them all is Joie/ Dead Blonde Girlfriend.

A solo artist from New York City, Joie sings passionately about growing older, depression, addiction, selling out to the music industry. Despite the fact that I've listened to the songs countless times, some of them still move me to tears. His songs are stories from his life, his descriptions set vividly into your mind as you listen.

Don't let the 3 chord joke scare you. While Joie's music is obviously punk influenced, it takes on a new feel, slower and fuller, when banged out on the acoustic guitar. The sound is massive, like a full band, as it fills the room. Joie's voice is rough, but strong and passionate.

Admittedly, his music is more simple than most out there today. It is just a man and his guitar as he tears down rock and roll to it's barest point and rebuilds it with skill and honesty. He takes away all the fluff, all the production, and simply tells you the truth.

Joie/Dead Blonde Girlfriend, like most of the music I recommend, is not necessarily for everyone, including some of my dear friends. For me, it is a perfect blend of power and truth, and one of my absolute favorites.

You can download mp3s and order cds of Joie/ Dead Blonde Girlfriend at http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/23/joiedead_blonde_girlfriend.html. Most of the tracks available are live. He is a regular at establishments in the East Village in New York, including The Fort at Sidewalk Cafe and Manatoba's. I will get to New York to see him live someday.
