Barenaked Ladies, BNL, The 'Ladies, which ever way you chose to refer to the Candian band Barenaked Ladies, it all comes around to the same thing, TOP NOTCH lyrics, music, humor, and live performances!!! WOO HOO!! I have been a fan of the Barenaked Ladies for over 5 years now, I have a wide variety of musical tastes but music these guys produce is the most well rounded, solid, musical compilation I have ever heard.
I had the pleasure of meeting the band backstage after a show in Minneapolis and the guys in Barenaked Ladies are about as down to earth and normal as it gets. Stephen Pages voice is simply awesome, from BNL classics like Break Your Heart to Call and Answer to covers like the CATS and Titanic theme songs, Stephens voice will blow you away. Ed Robertson and Page are the best on stage duo I have ever seen in concert and I have seen everyone from Steely Dan to Rage Against the Machine! Jim Creegan is wonderful on the bass, he simply adds another dimension to their music. Tyler does a nice job on the skins, he can really get down if he wants to! Kevin Hearn is a great musician on the keyboards, very versitile, fun to watch in concert! What I really like in these guys is the musical talent that they all possess, the song writing is quality, witty and very interesting in some cases, but the musical talent of all of these guys playing together is so awesome!
At this point the majority of people out there know the band from their "ONE WEEK" fame from their album Stunt, but there is so much more quality music from the earlier albums it is unreal! Stunt is great, I love, In The Car, Alcohol, Call and Answer, and It's All Been Done. Gordon their first break through album is full of awesome songs from the top to the bottom! Hello City, Enid, Brian Wilson, Box Set, Million Dollars, and Yoko Ono are my favorites. Maybe You Should Drive, the second album has some real gems as well; Jane, Intermittently, Life in a Nutshell and A my favs off this albums. Born on a Pirate Ship boasts, Old Apartment, Break Your Heart, and Straw Hat and Old Dirty Hank. Little discography for you there, but if I were a person interested in getting into BNL, I would say grab Gordon. If you are looking for some good BNL tunes that everyone doesn't hear all the time grab Maybe You Should Drive.
This band is the best live performers EVER. Hands down, these guys deliver clear concise tunes live, just like the CD. Some bands are great studio bands and they suck in concert, this band ROCKS in concert! Original BNL tunes, covers, banter (Ed and Steve impromtu rap and sing), Barenaked Rap, you name it you got live with these guys! Got a chance to go to a BNL show? FREAKING GO!! Wear your dancing shoes and be ready for your voice to be BLOWN the next day!! I cannot emphasize or over exaggerate enough about how awesome these guys are live, they are true showmen.
BNL is my favorite band, I am looking forward to and anticipating more fantastic music from these guys! I would recommend their music to fans 10-100, buy an album, go to a show, support the best band in the current era!!
