Warped Tour at Randall's Island NY summer 1999Dec 11 '00 Write an essay on this topic.Well, Im writing this review from memory a year after the event, so dont expect it to be perfect. But I guess the fact that I can remember the concert at all is a testament to how fun it was. Most of the people at the warped tour on that dusty, sunny, hot, dehydrated day in August (I think-- could have been June or July- sue me!) were there to see a band few people have heard of (sarcasm)- Blink 182, but my friends and I were there to see the Souls. A little background... Randall's Island is a pretty cool place, but at the place where they hold the concert, the ground is mainly dirt. In the sun and with people all walking around in there, the dirt turns to dust on the surface, and well, you can guess what happens next. Dust Bowl! There was also a truck with a spigot on it that dispensed water. That thing was probably the biggest mess of the whole place later in the day. The spigot was basically constantly left on and the whole ground in front of it was completely muddy. And with the hot weather and $5 water you had to pay for, the free water truck became a mob scene. Anyway, the Souls came on late in the day on the main stage, and were on right before Blink 182 (or so the flier said). As a result, a huge crowd amassed in front of the stage, but we were able to squeeze ourselves pretty close to the front. When the Souls came out, the rocked. I was surprised that most of the crowd knew basically all of the words to all of their songs, and we all sang to them. The front of the stage turned into one of the sicker mosh pits I've seen. Everyone dancing around in there and TONS of dust flying up into the air. I was surprised Greg could still sing with all of that dust flying. It only added to the excitement in the end, though, becuase when the songs got more intense, so did the dust, and it was really a crazy scene. Someone threw something at Pete- the guitarist (who was shirtless and hugely muscled) and he got this "Someone will die" look on his face and pointed at some dude in the crowd with an intense stare. The guy didnt throw anything else, needless to say. Pete also threw a bunch of stickers out into the audience reading "Guliani Sucks" (referring to NYC mayor Rudolf). They played all the basics - Born to Lose, Hopeless Romantic etc... and finished out with "Here We Go" as usual. When that was over, we went to leave since we had no interest in Blink 182. It turns out the schedule was changed, though, and "The Black Eyed Peas" played next. We stayed a few minutes listening to this, and some idiot kept throwing s##t on stage and the band threatened to stop. Then they brought out the fresh young face of a guy who was just starting to get popular "Eimenem." We left at that point. all in all GO SEE THE SOULS! |
