One of the small army of regional bands to rise to stardom in their home city (in this case Minneapolis), the Trashmen were one of the lucky few to chart a breakout hit: 1963 smash "Surfin' Bird." Welding together two gimmick songs by the Rivingtons, "The Bird's the Word" and "Pa Pa Ooh Mow Mow," and giving them a freak-out garage treatment, was a once-in-a-career stroke of unmitigated brilliance. The rest of the songs here, a typical garage amalgamation of R&B, doo wop, British Invasion, and especially surf, is never short of entertaining, with a few bracing turns. |
