Personnel: Jon Hassell (trumpet); Rick Cox (guitar, bass clarinet, samples); Ry Cooder (guitar); Rick Masterson, Rose Okada (tambura); Ronu Majumdar (Indian flute); Jacky Terrasson (piano); Joachim Cooder (drums); Jamie Muhoberac (zendrum). Recorded at St. Anthony's Seminary, Santa Barbara, California in October 1997 and August & November 1998. The ambient "water lily" mix on this unique Ry Cooder-produced date can get dangerously murky at times. On the other hand, this is as close to traditional jazz as the minimalist trumpeter Jon Hassell will ever hope to get, and the results are compelling. He even tries on some real standards such as "Nature Boy," "Poinciana," and "Caravan," exotic specimens to be sure but jazz standards none the less. Not too surprisingly, Hassell's deliberative playing throughout this set recalls the Zen style of Chet Baker in the late peripatetic stage of his career. |
