The Latest of the Best from Wesla Whitfield by karennz ,Jan 16 '04
Pros: "September Songs" brings out the best of Whitfield's and Greensill's respective talents. Cons: Honey, there *ain't* no downside to listening to, or owning a recording by Wesla Whitfield!
It's virtually a given that Wesla Whitfield excels in every recording she releases. But equal credit should be given here to her arranger/pianist/husband Mike Greensill.
Greensill sets the tone on each cut of "September Songs" with arrangements that are haunting and memorable. Whitfield interprets the songs with the utmost skill and sensitivity. Guest group Kronos Quartet adds lush layers of mood and melodic harmonies throughout.
Whitfield turns each cut into a complete piece. The title song is a remarkable interpretation of wisdom and weariness. "A Child is Born" is heart-breakingly touching.
Gary Foster and the late Tommy Flanagan also appear on "September Songs."
