Tattooedjedi's Favorite Hack 'em Up Flicks
May 14 '00
I have been a fan of this genre of films ever since I was a little Jedi and first saw Jason Voorhees jump through the window and attack Amy Steele in "Friday the 13th Part 2". Gore has always fascinated me in films. I have seen many, many good and bad horror films. Here is my list of my favorite ten. Sit back in your scare chairs and get ready for this list:
10) "Wes Craven's New Nightmare" -- this film was the scariest in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series, and was a precursor to the "Scream" series. This film takes a reality approach to horror, and features Freddy Kreuger (brilliantly played by Robert Englund), wreaking havok on Heather Langencamp, Wes Craven, and John Saxon "in real life". Something about this film was eerily creepy to me.
9) "Evil Dead 2--Dead by Dawn" -- Bruce Campbell starred in this legendary and campy horror sequel. Gorier and campier then the first, this has to rank up there as one of the best splatter films of all time. The best thing about it is the dark sense of humor it so well portrays.
8) "Dawn of the Dead" -- The sequel to George Romero classic, "Night of the Living Dead", this is the film that single handedly scared this addicted shopper from going to malls when he was a kid. As one of the best zombie flicks of all time, this is a must for my top ten list.
7) "Psycho" (Original Version) -- Alfred Hitchcock's original masterpiece is the film that defines the word 'horror' for me. The sense of fear created without seeing a single piece of gore was sheer directoral beauty. Anthony Perkins is truly menacing as the maniachal Norman Bates.
6) "Basket Case" -- this often overlooked 1982 low budget tale of disconnected siamese twins Duane and Belial is simply legendary for its campy nature. I'll never forget the first time I saw this film. It was simply horrifying seeing Duane carry Belial around in his little wicker box. Demented, I tell ya.
5) "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" -- Even Tattooedjedis have nightmares. This film was one that gave me more then my share when I first saw it. The scene when the dude cuts his hand inside of the van still gives me the creeps to this day. Leatherface was at his scary best here, in this evil tale, where the saw is family.
4) "Phantasm" -- the 1979 film which starred Angus Scrimm as the "Tall Man", and featured those little silver balls of death flying around throughout the movie. Another total masterpiece of horror, this film HAS to be on my list as well.
3) "Cemetery Man" -- Ruppert Everett is simply brilliant as Francesco Dela Morte, the man with the tough job of insuring the dead do not come back to walk the earth. Campy at times, dark at others, this terrific zombie picture becomes more and more of a classic each time I watch it.
2) "The Re-Animator" -- The film which gave us the tag line "Herbert West has a great head on his shoulders and another one in the dish on his desk". This classic horror film features a brilliant performance by Jeffrey Combs as Herbert West, the doctor who has figured out how to bring life to the dead. This film is based upon an old H.P. Lovecraft short story, and features the most bizarre sex scene you will ever see in your life. If you only own one horror film on DVD, this should be the one. A complete and total horror masterpiece.
1) "Night of the Living Dead" -- The most ironic film ever made in my eyes, and also the greatest work of scare horror. George Romero's masterpiece holds up time and time again. I've watched this film numerous times, drunk at 3 in the morning, and have found myself scared out of my Jedi robes well more then once. The gore factor is there just enough to fully punctuate the scary settings and story line. This is a film not to be watched alone. It amazes me how well this zombie flick holds up throughout the years.
Well there you have it. My personal list of top ten favorite horror films. I could have gone on and on with another ten, but I will stop here. I really wanted to include some Troma films here, but unfortunately when limited to ten, I really had to narrow my choices.
Time to go grab some popcorn and get scared some more.
Thanks for reading.
