Top Ten Horror Movies: The scariest of the scary

Jun 06 '00

I've been a hardcore fan of horror movies for quite some time now. I just love the suspense and the action that most all horror movies present. For me a GREAT horror movie must keep me on the edge of my seat the entire movie. There is not a dull part. Every part of the movie keeps me anticipating what's going to happen next. It may even keep me wondering after the movie is over. The ones that keep me in suspense even after the movie is over are the best horror movies. These are my Top Ten Favorite Horror Movies of All Time:

10.)The Shining (1980)

Excellent. This word completely sums up this movie. It definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat and in suspense. This movie is made from the plot set up in the Steven King book by the same name. Jack Nicholson is wonderful. He puts in a terrifying performance as the story's lead character. The setting takes place during the winter in an old creepy hotel that totally defines this movie.

09.)The Exorcist (1973)

How can a mother fight for her daughter's life when the daughter is possessed by a demon. Literally head spinning suspense. One of the scariest movies of all times.

08.)Psycho(1960)

No not the 90s remake of the classic film but the classic film itself. The 90s version is horrible was obviously a attempt at a remake at a really good horror movie. This is Alfred Hitchcock's ultimate masterpiece topped by no others. Norman Bates can be played by no other than Anthony Perkins.

07.)Poltergeist(1982)

One of the scariest movies ever produced one of the masters of movies, Steven Spielberg. A little inconsistent at times, this ghost story has it all. A typical family that struggles with supernatural powers in their home. A great crowd pleaser.

06.)The Birds(1963)

Another Alfred Hitchcock film. There is something about these birds attacking that just makes this movie horrifying. Everywhere you run there's birds...everywhere you hide there's birds. There is no escape.

05.)Night of the Living Dead(1968)

Again not the 1990 attempted remake of this wonderful movie. This classic horror movie still haunts people today. The plot deals with unstoppable zombies (except by burning) that kill people.

04.)Halloween I and II(1978 & 1981)

Michael Myers makes his appearance into the horror movie world with these two classics. The director would go on to make several more Halloween's but these two are the ones that stick in my mind. Jamie Lee Kurtis is a star in this movie at a young age.

03.)House on Haunted Hill(1958)

Vincent Price offers $100,000 to anyone that can survive a night in a haunted insane asylum, The House on Haunted Hill, all night. The 1999 remake is almost as good as the original as well. Both are must have movies.

02.)Texas Chainsaw Massacre(1974)

The usual bad things happen when a girl and her friends pick up a hitchhiker on the side of the road. As you can imagine this leads to several massacres as the title suggests. This movie is really weird but a must have for any horror lover.

01.)Carrie(1976)

Another Steven King movie. A depressed girl is driven to the brink by all of life's troubles. When watching check out young John Travolta. The prom scene is the greatest part of this movie. A must see.

I really love horror movies. They are always my first choice when renting movies. All of these choices are real suspense movies and will give nightmares to anyone with weak stomachs. Go out and rent them but only watch with a friend. And sleep tight!
