The many 5-star flicks of 1999.
Jul 06 '00 (Updated Oct 21 '00)
(Note:I haven't had the chances to do all of the movies of 1999 so this might be modified).
(And this list just might be controversal so I won't expect a lot of agreements.)
(In no particular order.)
ADVENTURES OF ELMO IN GROUCHLAND (Kids,Kevin Clash + Caroll Spinney,Rated G although there are some mildly intense moments)
This is one of the better sesame street films. A perfectly fine family film. It may feel "trippy" but it'll do fine for all you sesame street fans out there young and old.
ANALYZE THIS (Comedy/Satire,Billy Crystal + Robert DeNiro,Rated R for language and violence and some adult content)
Quite funny gangster spoof. DeNiro & Crystal went well in their roles. This isn't exactly one of "the best" movies out there but it is one of the better 1999 films.
BICENTENNIAL MAN (Drama/Comedy/Sci-fi,Robin Williams + Sam Neill,Rated PG for language and some sexual content)
If you loved "Patch Adams" then go right ahead with this one. If not then I cannot help you other than to recromend this fine absurdly underrated R.W film. WHATS SO FREAKISHLY WRONG WITH THIS FINE FILM PEOPLE! (Sorry for shouting)
WILD WILD WEST (Sci-fi/western/comedy/TV-show adaption,Will Smith + Kevin Kline,Rated PG-13 for violence and language & sexual content.)
Yes I do watch the old TV show and I am a fan of the show (sort of) but I still like this movie and can recromend this to its fans (Unless you're a purist). Kenneth Braunagh did a excellent job as Arliss Loveless. I thought this might be as good as Men in black but it is actually better so in another words folks keep your expectations low on this one like how I did.
EDTV (Comedy,Matthew McConnaughey + Jenna Elfman,Rated PG-13 for language and adult content)
Many folks considered this either "as good" or "worst than" the 1998 film "The Truman Show". To be honest I considered it equally as good as The Truman Show. Although this is more grudgy than T.T.S this is still as fine as T.T.S
TOY STORY 2 (Animated/Kids/Comedy,Tom Hanks + Tim Allen,Rated G but there is only some insignificant amount of violence and intensity)
Does this film remotely deserve all of its hype well then needless to say but my answer to that question is...YES! THIS IS ONE OF THE FILMS THAT FULLY DESERVE ITS PRAISE! Many folks consider it either as good or better or not as good as the original film. As for me I think this film is as equally fine as the original.
Iron Giant (Animated/Sci-fi/Family,Van Diesel + Jenifer Aniston,Rated PG for mild language)
This is one of the finest sci-fi animated films out there. (It is one of the finest sci-fi animated films since the 1986 absurdly underrated occultic hit "Transformers the movie".) It was underrated in B.O gross at first but it did well later and it recieved proper praise from the critics.
Pokemon the first movie (Anime/Kids/Fantasy/Sci-fi/Occultic Classic/TV show adaption/Video game adaption,Veronica Taylor + Rachel Lillis,Rated G for intense non-graphic violence)
This isn't quite "Transformers the movie" or "Kiki's Delivery Service" or even its novels but it was very very close. (If it weren't for WB's editing work it'll probably be a "Transformers the movie" of the 90's but it was close.) Speaking of "Transformers the movie" the upcoming sequel will have a Weird Al song in it (Yes this movie will have a sequel and that is because of this movie's B.O record they don't really care about the negative reviews the only reason why "Super Mario Brothers" is not going to have a sequel is because of the film's B.O record.) And THIS ISN'T MONONOKE OR THE DISNEY FILMS OR IRON GIANT OR SCOOBY DOO O.Z.I! (Don't get me wrong there are fine films and besides a animated movie can be fine even if it is not more built for adults or being based on something that is as old as most adults).
SCOOBY DOO AND THE WITCHES GHOST (Kids/Thriller/Mystery/Animated,Frank Welker + Tim Curry,Rated G for "Scooby-doo"ish frights)
This is slightly better than the scooby flick of '98 "Scooby doo and the zombie island". This is the final performance of fine voice-over actress Mary Kay Bergman (while the south park movie was her final theatrical performance it is the same thing with Phil Hartman between Small Soildiers & Kiki's Delivery Service.) This also gives some satricial punch to the old scooby series too that was a nice touch.
THE SIXTH SENSE (Thriller/Mystery,Bruce Willis + Hayley Joel Osment,Rated PG-13 for Intensity & some graphic content & language & some very mild adult content.)
Folks please do the cinematic world a favor and give this film more attention than that overrated piece of cinematic thrash "The Blair Witch Project". This is one of the finest thrillers of 1999. I apoligize to those who gave Blair witch higher praise than this fine film. But I must say that this film is vastly superior. Hollywood doesn't always mean inferior to indie. True I do not hate the independant genre but "indie" doesn't really mean "audacious" anymore.
BRINGING OUT THE DEAD (Thriller/Drama,Niccolas Cage + John Goodman,Rated R for violence & language & drug use)
This is the first scorsese film I have watched and though I shouldn't place my expectations so high but I hope his M.S's other films are remotely this good. Though I didn't think it will go bad before I saw it but I was pleasantly suprised in a lot of different ways. This is a great mixture of brains & heart. Its heartfulness prevented some of the violence in this film to look repulsive which whould knock this film down some. And the FX & cinematogrophy oddly enough gave this film a beautiful look so for a dark & gritty film it was kind of sweet & heartfelt too in the process. But make no mistake this is not a fluff film because there is plenty of violence in this film which surpisingly 99% not repulsive at all. Which is somewhat uncommon for films with lots amount of violence.
I could go on and on but I do it all in the review of this film which is what I'll be doing in the future. Surpisingly I ended up agreeing with Roger Ebert on how this is one of the best films of 1999.
PRINCESS MONONOKE (Anime fantasy,Billy Crudup + Claire Danes, Rated PG-13 for Violence & Language)
Folks I will be honest with you along with TOY STORY 2 & such this is one of those films that deserve its positive press. And I can easily see why this was in Roger Eberts top film list.
(Dang that was long)
Now this is some of "Honorable Mentions" of 1999.
American Beauty=This is flawed but it almost deserved all of its hype. This is Kevin Spacey's 2nd best film. (His #1 best film is "A Bug's Life")
Tarzan=This is a good disney film and is better than some of the other disney flicks.
Baby Geniuses=Yeah you heard right this is sort of my "Guilty Pleasure" of 1999.
For the love of the game=Sure I didn't care much about "Waterworld" & such but so what? This is Costners 2nd finest film in my book.
Dougs 1st Movie=I know about the negative press and frankly I do not care. It has been said by Mr.Cranky (The ticket rating one) that this is a effective satire apon all sorts of things. And I agree with that.
Blast from the past=OK why was the press on this one negative? With its rich supply of charismatic charm you seriously wonder why the sam hill this movie was bashed by the critics. The only reason why this was in the "honorable mentions" is that it just didn't have enough for a 5-star rating but it was close.
