Ten best according to HarryJr

Sep 07 '00 (Updated Oct 11 '00)

Well what can I say. It's hard to pick the 10 best, since there are so many good ones. Also, each person's personality colors their choices. I tend to lean toward the lighter/funnier side of anime, which will probably be reflected in this review. And now, from Deepinaharta, TX, the Top Ten Anime Films...

(Addendum) Okay, so I wasn't as accurate as I could be :-P I made some slight corrections thanks to a comment I received. As to the length/detail of this article, I believe that's up to me, is it not?

#10 - Grave of the Fireflies: This is sort of an "Honorable Mention". The film tells the realistic tale of a brother and sister in Japan after World War II. The reason it isn't rated higher on my list is because it's depressing, and not really my style. "But it's based on true events!" you might say. This is MY Top Ten list, remember?

#9 - The Saber Marionette J Again Series: Allright, not technically a "film" per se, but the six episodes could easily be combined. It's the funny and twisted tale of seven human-looking machines, called Marionettes, and the fate of their world. Few series I've seen have conveyed such humor, romance and intensity as this one. It's a wild ride for both the senses and emotions.

#8 - Ranma 1/2 OAV: An Akane to Remember: I'm a big fan of the Ranma 1/2 Series, and I think this volume (out of the ENTIRE series) is about the closest you can get to seeing the stubborn Ranma and Akane expressing feelings for one another. Want to know what's going on? See it and find out.

#7 - The El Hazard OAV Series: Again, it's actually eight episodes, but the overall storyline is a very involved one, dealing with travel through time and dimensions. It follows Makoto and his friends through the magical world of El Hazard. It also has a bit of comedy and romance involved. Very interesting.

#6 - Sailor Moon R Movie: For once the Sailor Scouts seem to have met their match, with an enemy from space. This film is filled with nail-biting suspense and action, along with a surprise ending. The power in this film is just unbelievable.

#5 - Akira: Many people are probably nodding at this point. Anime with excessive blood and violence is not normally my thing, but this movie stands above the rest. It involves a youth whose friend receives mental powers beyond imagination, and then something goes wrong. It is a profound movie with action and mystery lurking everywhere.

#4 - Sailor Moon S Movie: "What? Two Sailor Moon entries?" Hey, Sailor Moon is what got me interested in anime in the first place. Anyway, this one is different from the previous, in that it is more focused on romance than anything else, and since I am a closet romantic, that works out well. Plus, it uses the cast of the best Sailor Moon series I know. Even the ending credits were worth watching.

#3 - Tenchi Muyo in Love, the movie: This movie has a wide variety of interesting things: time travel, a race to beat the clock, action, and even several revelations into Japanese customs and culture. If you like Tenchi Muyo at all, this is definitely a must-see.

#2 - Kiki's Delivery Service: From the honorable director Hayao Miyazaki, this light-hearted adventure is simply delightful to watch, and has given me more than one insight into my own life. It follows a young witch-in-training named Kiki and her cat Jiji as she makes her way into the world. As part of her training, she is required to spend a year away from home in the real world, and through some interesting coincidences, starts a delivery service. This fun features is not just for kids, I urge everyone to give it a fair chance and check it out!

and the #1 Anime Film...

Princess Mononoke

Again, the same director as Kiki , and I see more people nodding. This movie about ancient Japan is well-known for its twisting plot and wholesome morals. It follows the quest of Ashitaka on his journey to find out what ails the Gods and Spirits of old, and his fateful meeting with Sahn, Princess of the Wolf tribe. The story and dialogue are not the only good things about this film, the scenery and art are breathtaking, and very much worth watching.

Well, there you have it. Hate it or love it, that's how I feel. Ja ne!
