Top Ten Dramas

When I think of good drama I think of the opposite of good action adventure. A drama must put the watcher on the edge of their seat with dialouge and human condition and not with explosions and flashy effects. I think that's why I respect the drama so much. Making a good drama is not always an easy thing to do. The following, in no particular order, are my picks for the ten best drama's in film history.
1- American beauty
It's hard to know if a film is going to stand the test of time. My guess is that this one will. American Beauty digs deep into the dark condition of the United States in the twilight of the twentieth century. Kevin Spacey masters the role of an every man that no man wants to admit he is.
2- A simple plan
I can sum this one up as simply gut wrenching. It's hard to keep yourself from yelling at the tv while watching. I've watched it several times with different groups of people and at the end comes the discussion of how we would have handled the situations that these people found themselves in. I think we would all like to think we'd have done things differently, but who knows for sure?
3- Goodfellas
I must admit that I'm a sucker for a good mob film. This is one of the best. Somedays I vote Godfather, but most days I vote Goodfellas. The movement of the film through Henry Hill's life provides a sense of kinship with the character. We can understand him and almost sympathize with his cause.
4- East Of Eden
James Dean's first and best piece of work. He nails the role in every aspect. This would have been a good film without him, but not a great film.
5- Pulp Fiction
I sometimes think everything to be said about Pulp has been said. It's not for the casual movie viewer, but if you have the time and desire you wont find a film with a more interesting bunch of characters.
6- Gone With the Wind
A movie set in the time when men were gallant and women were beautiful can go one of two ways. It can either bore you to tears, or it can be the greatest epic of all time. Gone With the Wind set a precedent for movie making like no film before or since.
7- Shine
I went into this film with zero expectations. I'd heard it raved by the critics and the fans alike, but I still didn't think I'd have much in common with it. A good film speaks to the masses in general no matter what the top theme is. This is a good film for just that reason.
8- 8 Seconds
This might be one of those films that I mentioned earlier. One of the ones that don't stand the test of time. However, for me it will always be one of the greats. I left this movie with a feeling of emptiness like no other film had ever given with me. That feeling stayed with me for the longest time afterward. Any film that sparks that deep of an emotion will make my list any day.
9- PI
Wow!!! I've never seen anything that I could even remotely compare to PI. The use of black and white makes the film all the more intense. When it was over I couldn't wait to watch it again so I could take away a little something more.
10- Fight Club
I put it on my list because it is my favorite of the moment. I find the favorite changes all the time, but it doesn't hurt to include what's on your mind at the present time. Fight Club is one of those films that belong in the Brad Pitt can actually act pile.
