"What we have here is failure to communicate!"

Jun 01 '00

Now, I've compiled my overall top 10 favorite dramas ever made, with five honorable mentions. I understand that there are so many notable, "fan favorite" dramas I have yet to see so don't be too critical of me for not listing other films that deserve high regards. Also, recently I have NOT been to the movie theater all that often. In fact, I just saw American Beauty, for the first time, on video. I was somewhat disappointed in the movie and all it's hype. I guess I wanted to see a nice, happy ending. But in other's minds, that is a happy ending for Lester. Because of the ending, it failed to make my top 10 list.

The criteria for my list are two factors:
1. Does this film make me think about it days after my viewing?
2. Will this movie make an excellent novel (if it isn't already)?

Anyway, enjoy my list. Please feel free to comment.

In descending order.

Honorable mention-
Bull Durham, Everybody's All American, Legends of the Fall, Taxi Driver, and That Championship Season

10. Field of Dreams, Although this movie may not be believable, I felt the touching ending of playing catch with his father. Also, Dreams has some "sometimes forgotten" baseball history.

9. Casino, Another beautiful film of Robert D. and Joe Pesci. This movie portrayed to me my outlook on mob/gangster thinking and activities. Casino will keep you interested and in your seat.

8. Shawshank Redemption, An epic of true friends, after so many years, finding the right "tunnel" in life.

7. Sixth Sense, A film with a lot of great tension and leaves you stumped at the end. I was talking about this movie for days. Just think, I wanted to see American Beauty instead of this film. I'm glad I saw this one in the theater.

6. One Flew Over the CooKoo's Nest, Jack is at his best. I think so many people said enough about this film that it changed the way of group counseling and inpatient institutions. I hope there are televisions in psychiatric hospitals?

5. It's My Party, This film didn't get much attention. I cried through this movie. It's a touching movie involving AIDS and the best of friends. It's a must rent.

4. The Bronx Tale, it's the traditional New York gangster mystique. This is a struggle of a teen undecided, to follow his friends to tragic means, to listen to his father, and to follow his heart. Overall, this film shows how a child growing up learns how to make responsible decisions.

3. Rebel Without A Cause, this film is before my time but I wanted to view it because of it's history. Actually, my parents recommended to me. I loved it. It's a great portrayal of teen tragedy.

2. Cool Hand Luke, This should be a modern day remake. This southern style film, like Shawshank, is a film of friends and conformity. I love the dialogue by the warden.

#1. At Close Range, I haven't viewed this movie in over five years. I still think about this movie. Each time I'm at the video store I look for this one. I can never find it. If you think Chris Walken is a scary person, see this one!

That it. I can't say that I enjoy one film over the other but for this epinion I rated them. Dramas are my favorite films to see.
