10 Best Movies (Reply to this comment)
by Bryony
"The Last of the Mohicans" does not belong on any "best of all time" film lists. It's everything the writer said it was, but even so it can't compare with the other nine mentioned.

Thoughtful though subjective (Reply to this comment)
by mrnews
Great list Howard, glad I finally saw it. You're right though, such lists are very subjective, tempered only by each author's knowledge and experience with the subject. If we're talking seminal (important) films that are also fun to watch (popular), I would have included "JFK", "Casablanca", "Citizen Kane", "Fantasia", "Forbidden Planet", "2001", "Cabinet of Dr Caligari", "Roger Rabbit", "Judgement at Nuremburg", and "Seven Samurai". Actually there's no way you can pick just ten. Oops, left out "Battleship Potemkin", "Modern Times", "Taxi Driver", etc., etc. But I did enjoy your thought-provoking choices.

Love your choices, Howard! Very pleasant surprise to see "A Boy And His Dog" on your list --- that's a personal favorite of mine and I'm glad a few other good folks liked it, too.
Happy Holidays, amigo!
Don :)

What great choices... (Reply to this comment)

Though The General isn't my fave Keaton -- that honor goes to Steamboat Bill, Jr. -- it's certainly a masterpiece. And Treasure, Chinatown, Third Man, Window, Clementine and Sunset are all movies I could watch till the end of time. Superb commentary that makes me want to pop these in the VCR right now... they don't make 'em like they used to! =)

the fact that "The General" was #1. The list you compiled had some real winners on it, can't sau I agree with the "mohicans" choice, but its a great review, period.

Well Done! (Reply to this comment)

I enjoyed reading your list. I can tell you some stories about some of these movies. A friend of mine was an extra in THE AFRICAN QUEEN. Henry Winkler was first inspired to become an actor after watching REAR WINDOW. When I was in college, I took Spanish, and we read the novel on which the movie, THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE, is based on in Spanish. I loved STAND BY ME. All of the little boys were adorable and reminded me of various kids I went to school with. I especially thought the little fat guy was adorable.

Re: Top ten list (Reply to this comment)
by Realtime
I've long had somewhat of an interest in "A boy and his Dog" ( though I'm not a Don Johnston fan ) for it's storyline content. Once attended the world premeire for "the Harder They Come" (where I remember Joni Mitchell, Peter Asher and Phil Ochs were in attendence, too ) but haven't seen it again since. "Chinatown" as hard as the story is, easily makes my Top Ten of all times. Rt.......

Dave, I'm with you, "A boy and his Dog" is a superb Sci Fi flick (I didn't even mention "The Hidden" which is one of MY all time favorites....that would have gotten me even more anon NR's) Thanks for stopping by.

"A Boy And His Dog" didn't make the cut.
And who could "NR" this? A retalitory response I'm sure. Kinda looks lonely amoungst all the high ratings.
Good work,
Dave

Wow, some of these titles sure did bring back a lot of memories. I agree about Buster Keaton, with his talents no words are needed. And they don't make movies like they used to. :)

Buster Keaton is one of the real geniuses of American film. Rent one of his shorter ones Sherlock Jr., the Baloonatic, or the Navigator you'll soon see that dialog isn't needed. Thanks for your kind comments.

Excellent review. Don't know how I'd do with the Buster Keaton (the silent thing kinda scares me) but now I definitely want to see "The Third Man."
And now I'm also in the mood to see "Chinatown" again...
Thanks
