Sequels suck and here's why

Oct 17 '00

Let me get to the point right away: Sequels generally suck. Have you ever truly seen a sequel that is better than the first film? I have but not very often. Generally sequels are made not to serve as the continuance of a story but rather as a way for the studios to make more money.

Here's an example: "Meet the Parents" has made a lot of money in the last two weeks and thus has made the studio extremely happy. They see that the film is profitable and that people generally enjoyed the film and so guess what? A SEQUEL is planned. That's right folks...Coming out in a year or two will be "Meet the Fockers" which serves as a reversal of the original movie where, instead of Ben Stiller meeting Teri Polo's parents, Teri Polo's parents will meet Ben Stiller's parents. Oh how original!

I am sick to death of meaningless sequels that trash a good movie's name. Let's take a sequel that is coming out in a few weeks: "Blair Witch 2". What is the point of making a sequel to this? Somebody tell me. The studios seem to think that everybody is extremely gullible and will want to see this cr*p. Let me put it this way: I saw Blair Witch 1 and had no problems with it but it didn't make me want to see Blair Witch 2. Sequels generally don't work because: a) the reason for the sequel is not to expand on the story but rather as a way for a studio to make more money, and: b) sequels generally are worse than the originals because they try to outdo the original(see "Mission Impossible 2" and "Terminator 2" for example)when it comes to special effects without coming up with an interesting story.

I know that this subject of sequels doesn't quite fit in this category. In a way though it does because some o the worst movies of the 1990s were sequels. Here for example are five terrible movies from the 90s that were sequels:

Beverly Hills Cop 3(The first was ok but after that there was no point. This film in the series is especially pointless)

The Lost World: Jurassic park 2( I personally thought Michael Crichton writing a sequel to his bestselling book was a mistake. i thought it was an even bigger mistake when Spielberg used almost none of the book and decided to have his own version of Godzilla with a T. Rex running around in San Diego...Fun)

Lethal Weapon 3 and 4 (Part 2 was an ok film but Parts 3 and 4 have dragged this franchise in the mud. Mel Gibson's character isn't even close to being like he was in the first one and Danny Glover never seems to retire even though he keeps intending too! There's only so many times you can run the same ideas)

Look who's Talking 2 and 3(The first one was cute. The other two were pointless)

Urban Legends and I know what you did last summer 2(In which bad originals get even worse)

Anyways so here is what I suggest. If you can help it stay away from sequels unless they have a good story. The Star wars sequels always generally work because George Lucas when he created the first film had an idea about 6 films and thus they make sense. The Back to the Future trilogy makes sense because a sequel was planned all along(Otherwise why leave a cliffhanger at the end of part 1?). Heck go and see the Matrix sequels when they come out as the Wachnowski brothers always had the idea that the Matrix was going to be the first in a trilogy. When a sequel has a purpose to exist that isn't financial that is when you generally will get a good sequel.

PS: "Terminator 2" was a good movie but it wasn't as awe inspiring in its storyline or original or even emotionally heartbreaking like the first. "Aliens" was a good film and my favorite of the series but the first Alien film ranks right up there too. In fact the only sequel better than the original might be "The Bride of Frankenstein"(which was a heck of a lot better than "Frankenstein")and perhaps "The Godfather pt. 2"(although I prefer the first one). Still the overall rule applies: Stay away from sequels!
