I vant to suck your blood....

May 13 '00

Horror films began with silent movies. Phantom of the Opera was one of the earliest silent flicks but it didn't make my list. I do, however have movies on my list from the 30's.

(Drum roll)

My favorite horror films ever are:

10. The Thing - 1952

This movie stars the voiceless James Arness in his first motion picture role as the alien. He crashes his spaceship on earth, freezes in a block of ice and when it melts, he creates havoc until he is fried by electricity. This movie scared me when I was a child.

9. Dracula - 1931

Bela Lagosi stars as a blood sucking vampire, in the role that he could never get out of. The performance of Dwight Frye (Renfield) is magnificent as a mad man. Dr. Van Helsing is the hero as he drives a stake into Dracula's heart. As far as I'm concerned, Bella is, and will always be, the only Dracula for me. (Just a little trivia, he was buried in his Dracula cape).

8. Them - 1954

Once again, James Arness stars in this movie as an FBI agent, to investigate the death of another agent and his family. What he finds is Them, a family of giant ants. James Whitmore also stars in this classic horror film. Fire is the cure in this great production, which also left an impact on me when I was young.

7. Frankenstein - 1931

Boris Karloff stars as this man made out of many different people's body parts. Dwight Frye plays Igor and Colin Cline plays Dr. Frankenstein (It's alive, it's alive). What I found interesting is that Bela Lagosi was offered this part but turned it down. Poor Frankie burns and drowns on a pier, or so the legend goes....

6. Friday the 13th - 1980

Betsy Palmer plays the murderer in the original movie, revenging the death of her son. He drowned in Crystal Lake because the counselors were not paying attention. She goes after all the counselors, including Kevin Bacon. This movie scared the pants off me!

5. Invasion of the Body Snatchers - 1956

Kevin McCarthy stars in this movie as Dr. Miles Bennett. He is trying to find out what is going on in a small California town. It seems that bean pods are taking over the bodies of the residents while they sleep. Dana Winters also stars in this movie that has no end. I always wondered if those pods were heading my way.

4. The Blob - 1958
Look ma, it's jello. Steve McQueen made his starring debut in this movie about an out of space monster who could shake, rattle and roll through the town. McQueen, with all of his teen friends save the day and freeze this roly poly.

3. Poltergeist - 1982
"He's back" This movie was scary as Carole Anne (Heather O'Rourke) is taken by some spirits and her parents (Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams) fight to get her back. This movie and #2 really got to me because it dealt with a child.

2. The Exorcist - 1973
Linda Blair plays the lead in this movie, which starts out showing an adorable, loving child, who turns into a monster. Max Von Sydow and Ellen Burstyn are wonderful in this movie. Every time they got ready to go upstairs, and they played that music, I got under the covers. Very suspenseful and haunted me for a long time.

1. Alien - 1979
I picked this movie as my number one horror film because it was the most suspenseful of all the movies I have listed. Sigourney Weaver and John Hurt are wonderful in this movie about a monster who really knows how to keep people tied up. The little aliens could get into your system and pop out in a nasty way. The mother alien was huge, mean and hungry.
This movie kept me on the edge of my seat.

With most movies, the remakes which you may have seen, can never compare to the original ones. You might remember Kirt Russell starring in the 1980 remake of The Thing. Although I love Russell, the movie was a failure. The Blob was remade in 1988 and also bombed out.

(Honorable mention: Rodan - one of my favorite monster movies. I did not feel it belonged in this category but I always cried at the end. I loved those big birds! If you have never seen this one, it's a must see).

If you are looking for a good, scary, or suspenseful movie, try any of the above. I hope you have enjoyed my selection. These movies are all on my video shelf. Want to borrow one?
