hollysbears's Full Review: Garfield Christmas Special
I first saw the Garfield Christmas Special when it first aired on t.v. in the late 1980's and amazingly my family still has the original tape we taped it off of t.v. from.
Let me set the scene for you, a house decorated with Christmas lights that would make any Griswold proud, Garfield fast asleep in his box with a roaring fire behind him, and John dressed up as an elf. He nudges Garfield awake only to lure him to the Christmas tree with lasagnas to see his big Christmas present. "It's the gift that keeps on giving Garfield!" John exclaims.
That is the perfect way to describe this special, the gift that keeps on giving. We're used to seeing Garfield, John, and Odie in their most comical moments, but here they take a trip to spend Christmas with John's parents at the farm and with more characters, there's even more laughter.
The writers poke fun at the families who have to overdo everything during Christmas, the mother who cooks too much food, the father who complains about putting up the huge Christmas tree, and here we are introduced to one of the most lovable of the characters, John's Grandma.
Some of the most tender and touching moments in this special are when Grandma is holding Garfield and talking about past Christmases when her husband was alive. "We never had much," she said, "But on Christmas, it was enough."
Like with a lot of good Christmas specials, this one despite having Garfield, brings us back to the fundamental thought that it isn't important what you get for Christmas, it's being with family that matters.
This is one of my favorite Christmas specials out there, and we always watch it every Christmas. Garfield is at his funniest here (with maybe the exception of the Halloween special) and this one has some touching moments to enjoy too.
