Slashing...Gashing...Blood, Guts and Gore

Jun 27 '00

I am separating my "Horror Top Ten Lists because horror has its own categories.

But for this list we will do Slashers.

Slashers are movies that are a bit more harsh in the violence sequence. Some with very little story line except for the killer killing and blood all over. Most slashers are actually quite horrid in the way of a real plot, but there is some excellent slasher films made mainly back in the eighties that have become cult classics.

In no special order:

1: Dead Alive
This is one of those movies with no real story behind it except blood and guts. It is also the most gross movie I have ever seen and love it to death. The movie is a spoof comedy with slash and gash throughout it. With walking dead creeping up all over the house eating each other and intestines chasing Lionel, the main character, this movie is the best cut up movie with no story at all there is.

2: Halloween
The first real slasher movie, also the most popular. Whenever anyone hears that melody that plays throughout the movie, they know that Michael Myers is out and ready to find his newest victim. Donald Pleasance and Jamie Lee Curtis are the stars in this movie and the movie that set Curtis into the role of Scream Queen. There has been sequels to this popular movie, but not one will ever out do the horror this original movie created.

3: Toolbox Murders
I remember this movie from the days of Drive-ins. My mother took me to see this film on my 13 birthday and I feel in love with the weird idea of using tools as killing weapons. At least strange ways of using tools as killing weapons. The movie is quite cheesy in todays taste and the acting is horrid, but this is one movie I have had to buy twice for my collection because of wearing it down from so many viewings.

4: Texas Chainsaw Massacre
I don't have enough fingers and toes to count how many times I have seen this movie. (well, actually if I lived in that household, I would have plenty of toes and fingers to count). This movie always creeps me out, even though I know the next scene there is something about this movie that keeps the viewer coming back for more. They made sequels from this movie, but none can outdo the scene where the girl awakes to find herself tied into a chair made out of bones and skin and grandpa ready to suck her dry.
The true meaning of dysfunctional family life.

5: Black Christmas
This is a hard movie to find. I only seen it once at a drive in years a go but it always stayed at the back of my mind as one of the best horror cult classic movies there is.The atmosphere of this movie leaves me with shivers whenever I recall the girl lying there with her open mouth with the plastic over her head. What a way to go...shiver....if your lucky you will catch this video at a video store. I can't even find it to buy a copy. Someday I shall and my video collection will be happy. It is not the greatest acting, not the best storyline, but the atmosphere of the dark shadows playing against the walls, well that is what makes this movie hit my list.

6: Motel Hell
Maybe it is the gardener in me, or maybe I am just one sick puppy; but the idea of sticking human beings into the ground with their heads sticking up still alive in my garden...well, it sure gets me a' laughing. Also next time you buy sausage you really might want to check the label on it. If the brand came from these farmers, you might just want to double think about eating it. This is a must see for all horror fans, between heads in gardens, a man wearing a pig's face fighting with chainsaws and sausage that you just don't know about...well, you get the jist of what makes this a slasher film.

7: Nightmare on Elm Street
Had to make sure Freddy jumped on this list. With all his sequels he lost his appeal from this first movie. This movie was jinxed for me. When it first came out I couldn't get to see it for five months. Each time I went to see it I was either rained out (drive ins) or the theater was sold out. When I finally got to see it, I had nightmares for weeks on end and loved each nightmare I had. The scene in the alley is the one that always haunted me. The atmosphere, the music, the man whom invades dreams and the screeching of metal against metal will live on the top ten list for a long long time.

8: Alien Dead
A dumb movie from the early 80's that I love. It really tried to be a sci-fi but the walking dead people eating the village people up just missed being sci-fi by...oh...quite a lot. The acting is the worst I have ever seen. I laughed harder then I would have at a comedy, but the gross out was here. The eating scenes are the best. The story is silly, but for a fun gross movie, this is the movie to see.

9: Chopping Mall
Little protector machines that chop invaders to death is pretty cool beaners. The invaders are a group of teens that decide to stay after a mall closes. What they didn't realize that the security guards at the mall consist of little machines that like to chew people up and then spit them out. For great bloody scenes where the killer isn't a human this is the movie to see.

10: American Gothic
If you never seen this movie, go now...get it! Another dysfunctional family that comes right out of the Farmer's Almanac. This movie actually has a pretty decent plot to it also. The acting is not bad either. An usual thing for slasher movies back in the eighties. The ending is great! Not what the viewer expected. This movie is a must see in the dark of the night with no lights on what so ever, and please..if a group of hillbillies come knocking at your door...chain it, lock it, toss the frig against it..you don't want them to visit you and you sure to heck don't want to visit them.

Well there you go. My slasher movies that I adore. Of course, as time goes by and visits to the video store become more frequent it might change. But what you see here have been my favorites for quite a long time. Actually, Truth or Dare was up here before, but after viewing Dead Alive, it fell down to #11. Another hard to find movie, but if you can find Truth and Dare grab it, watch it and be ready to not eat for awhile. (and no not the Madonna version...but that could be a horror flick too now that I think about it)
