QUILLS: best provocative film!
Sep 30 '00
This film takes place at the roots of the ages-old controversy over obscenity. Geoffrey Rush plays The Marquis de Sade, who is the source of the profanity being seeped to the seemingly innocent outside world.
You never really see anything too profane happening in these movies taking place in Puritanical time settings such as this, which makes Quills even more erotic. Chaste and innocent looking Kate Winslett did a fantastic job, I mean, wow, you have to check her out in this flick. Again, the paradoxical imagery created from such a pure young laundry girl and the dark lust she is involved in makes the movie all the more powerful and provocative.
I don't like giving too much in reviews, but some key good things about the movie: 1) excellent cast 2) more importantly, superbly executed roles by this cast 3) Unique and captivating story line 4) Phil Kaufman did a fantastic job of putting it all together. Every scene, every action was for a reason, and noticeably well thought out.
Only bad thing I can think of is, I guess you wouldn't enjoy it as much if you are looking to watch a cheesy or no-brain action flick that doesn't require much thinking at all.
All in all, Quills is an intelligently made film, with a ton of thought provoking substance. I enthusiastically recommend it.
