| demosthenes's Full Review: Wall Street Journal |
I'm a huge Wall Street Journal groupie. I used to only read the New York Times until a chance encounter with the Journal in a college coffeeshop and i've been a convert every since.
The Journal provides pithy analysis and insight into the major national, international and financial issues of the day as well as humorous, intellectual ruminations and human interest stories. Daily literary, theatrical and musical reviews as well as a strong editorial and opinions page are hallmarks of the paper.
The Front Section provides a quick way to skim the news of the day with it's two "What's News" columns that give blurbs on the major business & finance and world-wide stories in the paper along with their requisite page numbers. Column Four is usually the most enjoyable story of the day as it's always a little known human interest story tracked down by some of the intrepid Journal reporters. Without fail, this column is always engaging to peruse.
I always find the Marketplace section the most enjoyable of the three sections - Front, Marketplace, and Money & Investing. Walter Mossberg's Personal Technology column is a must read as his thorough critical opinions of new products are usually spot-on...and when they are not, he's the first to admit it.
Friday's, the Journal includes a "Weekend Section" which includes one of the best parts of the paper - the Journal's insightful, understandable wine columnists. Every week, they sample and critique five to ten wines in a certain category and region keeping most bottles in the $10 to $40 range. Many weeks, I have taken this column to the wine store and made several tasty selections with the columnists' help.
Cheers to the Journal - a great paper!
