story ideas that do not make the advertisers happy, according to sources who gave me this information late one night in 1997:
-a story called 'how to be cooler than everyone else' that are pegged to the release of the movie HYPE! and is actually filled with FAKE BANDS;
-a 2-page spread on the best places in chicago to dump someone, pegged for valentine's day;
-a tour of a fortune-cookie factory;
-a 2-page oral history of the life and times (and jail times) of bobby conn, chicago's antichrist;
-a regular 'conspiracy theory of the week' section.
story ideas that do make advertisers happy, as evidenced by the most recent issue of nyou, which replaced tgif, which is where all the stories above came from and which i used to edit:
-y2k story about the millennium bug on campus;
-y2k story about a 'funky' party in chicago on new year's eve;
-y2k story about a blues club's plans for new year's eve (this way you know that the editors are 'down' with the 'street' -- see also the 'funky' party story);
-a columnist who gives tips on what to do on new year's eve.
of course, i'm bitter (that keeping-advertisers-happy comment was a criticism of my editing style; it predated that whole wall-falling-at-the-la-times hullabaloo by about 6 months, so i get to be a trendsetter in even that respect), and as a result definitely biased -- but i have a question for the editors of this section -- what good is an alternative venue for publication when you're saying the exact same things as everyone else? aren't there trees to be saved, here? i would think so.
