As the new century dawned earlier this month my beloved newspaper, The Arizona Republic, changed format. I browsed through the new issue and was feeling kind of lukewarm about the change. I expected that after a few days of acclimation I would come to enjoy the new format just as much as the old format...wrong. I hate it.
This paper went from being an astute and evenhanded news source to a gore-glory, biased, sales machine. I cannot belive that they 'sold out' as badly as they did. A little bit of change here and there is acceptable but they took the entire paper and messed it up.
The front section of the paper used to be full of informative and useful articles on the state of affairs worldwide, now it looks like one big department store ad.
The section banners used to be clearly identifiable. At a glance you knew if you were picking up the Valley and State section or the Living section, now you don't have any idea until you shove the paper under your nose and carefully read the banner.
They have also managed to take any logical order out of the articles. The Valley and State section looks as though the Editor took a handful of unrelated articles and threw them at the paper. I do not want to read about a murder and then in the space right below it read a restaurant review. Yuck!
As far as the yellow journalism on the Editorial page....well...I thought the Editor was a moderate. I guess not.
SOME of the changes have been good, I'm sure, but I would be hard pressed to remember any of them right now. For now I think I will find out what it would cost to get The Wall Street Journal delivered to my door. Perhaps I should go change the papers in the bottom of my Canary's cage? I just happen to have some extra papers lying around.......
