| mrssmoopy's Full Review: Trenton Times |
Are you looking for local, state, and national coverage? Look no further, pick up a copy of The Times.
This newspaper has been serving the state capital of Trenton, NJ "for more than a century". Due to recent changes in the naming of this newspaper, you can still find the local paper boxes, and the store shelves still labeled The Trenton Times. The current title of this paper is Hamilton Metro, The Times. Everyone from this area still calls it The Trenton Times. I've been subscribing to this paper for almost 12 years now.
Daily paper (Monday thru Saturday): $.25 cents
Sunday paper fee:$1.25
Why should you chose this paper over other larger, better known newspapers? Living in central New Jersey, I am stuck in a commuter's state, and have little selection by way of television news, and local newspapers. Turn on any television, or pick up The Philadelphia Enquirer, or the New York times, and you will see very little, if anything, on Mercer County, my stomping ground. I want to know what is happening in my back yard, as well as the major cities close by, so I chose The Trenton Times.
The format of this periodical is a full page layout so when you pick up the paper for the first time, you see the main picture, major eye catching titles, and you open the rest of the paper down, then open it to the left to view inner pages. The area's other major newspaper, The Trentonian, is more reader friendly due to it's printed style which is similar to a book. No opening down first, just open the paper, and you are ready to go. This may not seem important to some, but there was a big grumbling in the area when The Times changed it's format, and it's not as easy to just open and read. I don't mind the format, but others do.
The Times covers all aspects of the news in several sections, and increases in size, and selection on the weekends. Here's a brief glimpse of the sections you can expect to see:
Front Page: Breaking news that effects the nation, as well as late breaking stories that effect the local community. Features bold titles, and color photos, and mature statements. (The Trentonian is well known for trying to catch prospective readers through trashy titles, and suggestive bolded statements). The Times's front page offers an index to the paper itself.
What's inside this periodical?
Page 2 : Today in History, Weather(Weather: Listed on the front page in a brief description, but also an extended forecasts can be located in the paper as instructed in the glossary section printed on the front page.), Lottery, Road Repair notices, as well as the "Contact Us" section to reach all areas of the newspaper itself by phone, fax, and email.
Business Section: Discusses national and local businesses as well as includes my husband's favorite section, the classifieds. Stock listings, and such are located in this area.
Classified Section (subcategory in the Business Section);Auto, Local Business ads, Pets for sale, Free item section, Bargain Basement, Merchandise Mart, Real Estate, Employment Section, and lots, lots more to chose from. We often find items we are looking for in the Bargain Basement section of this paper which is located in the classified section. The Times Business Section appeals to a more selective reader. I personally sell items in this classified section with much success. The Times is very affordable to advertise, and the Customer Service Section of the Classified section is one of the friendliest that I've dealt with in calling in advertisements for business, as well as pleasure. (Just a miscellaneous note: I've worked for local companies who run employment ads, and chose the Trenton Times over the Trentonian due to the clientele that the Times attracts over the other paper. The Trentonian features a page 6 "Girl" which is a local woman in seductive poses in skimpy clothing, this seems to give the Trentonian a "trashy" paper image. The Trentonian uses these pictures on the majority of their billboards, and they are on the front page as well.)
Community Section: Local county, town, and state articles discussing local achievers, heroes, and politician's stories. Local township activities are also found in this section.
Horoscope: now what paper doesn't have this section?
Living: Looking for movie times, art shows, or events coming to our area? Look no further! View articles on local artists who are making a difference in this area, or have moved up to the big time. Cultural events, plays, and school events can also be found here.
Lottery: Who wants to be a Millionaire?
Nation & World: Offers what you'd see in any national/international paper.
Obituaries: Out of state deaths are listed if the person resided in this area. Local losses are also listed.
Opinion Section: Letters to the editor, and the "paper's" opinion on topics.
Sports: Everything from soup to nuts: local, school, pro, and lots more.
Television: Looking to see what's on tonight?
Special Notes:
Wednesday's paper offers special "in paper only" coupons for local grocers, as well as bonus sales fliers. Expanded sections depending on the area's events.
Sunday's paper offers separate printed coupons, as well as, department store sale papers, local fliers, and even special trial size samples (home delivery only).
This local periodical focuses on New Jersey itself, and adds in other major articles, rather than featuring large city happenings, and mentioning Mercer County and surrounding areas. Living between New York City, and Philadelphia PA, we often get lost in the big city shuffle in television news. I know I can find out what is going locally, nationally, as well as international news. Find it all in The Trenton Times.
