| camarocks's Full Review: Quartet gbc 55X Cross-Cut Shredder |
I can compare the GBC 55X to a car that is able to go only slightly faster than the speed limit. This shredder has just enough power to do its job and none to spare. My father bought a paper shredder in the interest of security. With how many of these "ready to write checks" credit card companies send you, it's not a bad idea to destroy these as quickly as possible.
With the 55x's cross cut feature, there is little chance that the remnants could be pieced back together. The manual states that up to 4 sheets can be shredded at one time, but I have found that anything over 2 sheets is putting quite a bit of strain on the mediocre motor. It does live up to the claim that you don't have to remove staples before shredding. Also, if you experience a paper jam, there is a "reverse" switch which will reverse the blades in order to clear the jam. One good point about the 55x is that it is very easy to empty the basket.
Overall, I think that your $99 could be put towards a better shredder. The GBC 55x is too noisy and too underpowered for the price. This is a classic example of "you get what you pay for".
