Here's how to choose a decent shredder.
Dec 26 '00 (Updated Dec 27 '00)
Today is a special day. Not only is it December 26 (Boxing Day in Canada) but it is also the day that I, the great Z HOUSE, shall tell you how to choose the perfect shredder.
To make things less complicated, I will make this list based on home-owned shredders.
You can purchase a decent working shredder to dispose of old documents that collect and build up around your house. And it's easier to shred your old documents than to tear them up by hand, one-by-one.
#1. PRICE
You can buy a good shredder for up to thirty dollars. No kidding. They're usually more money in you buy a shredder that has it's own garbage can. Use a box or buy a two dollar bin. This will help save on the money factor.
#2. TYPES OF SHREDDERS
There are two kinds of shredders: straight cutters and cross-cut shredders. Straight cutters shred your papers into thin strips, while cross cutters will shred those thin strips into confetti. Since it is already impossible to piece together the thin strips, buying a simple straight cutter shredder is a lot more cost effective.
#3. SHEET CAPACITY
Many decent home shredding units can shred three documents at a time, but there are also well-priced home shredders that can shred up to five documents without much strain or wear. These are what you should looking out for.
#4. SHEET WIDTH
Buy a shredder with at least an 8.5 inch width. Any smaller and you'll only be able to shred envelopes with ease.
#5. AUTO FEATURES
And finally, make sure your shredder has a switch to auto shred your documents, in case you need to give your shredder a continuous feed of paper. Plus this feature also helps if your shredder gets jammed.
When you buy a shredder for up to thirty dollars, make sure it has all the features I've listed above. If not, then you might be getting ripped off.
