Kids & Camping...Do they mix?

I live in the land of 4 seasons, namely New England. The Winters are bitter cold; in Spring, you see the miracle of life in everything around you; you can't beat our foliage in Autumn; and our Summer is what lemonade was invented for!!

We officially started camping last year, after talking about it for a couple of years and not really doing much about it. We bought a used pop up camper and headed for New Hampshire. The whole time, I was worried how my one year old would adjust. Where we were heading for was at least 3 1/2 hours away, so our adventure really started in the van! We stocked up on kiddie tapes and picture books, his favorite foods, drinks, and snacks, and said a prayer. Truth be told, he adjusted better than I did! He was great the entire trip up to New Hampshire, busied himself with his toys, slept, and 'sang' to his music. Once we got to our destination, we found that the camper became 'home' to him, as much as our 7 room house did! He explored every inch of that camper, found where the toy cabinet was, had fun stacking the canned goods from another cabinet, joined the pots & pans 'bang as loud as you can' band, and truly made the experience one that I will never forget!

He enjoyed getting in his backpack seat and exploring the woods with his Daddy, reaching for leaves and pointing out things he didn't recognize, asking "What's that" over and over again.

The week passed so quickly that we could hardly believe that we had to pack up and come back home!

Now he's two, and enjoys camping even more than he did last year. We graduated to a small hard-sided camper, and go camping every weekend. He gets excited when we're packing up the truck to go, because he knows that we're going camping. No matter what the weather, he's just happy to be there, going for walks, playing at the playground, swimming, eating ice cream, going for bike rides (he has a kiddie trailer that gets pulled behind the bike), playing with his friends, and just being with us.

So the answer to my own question is...yes, kids and camping DO mix!!
