I bought the Remington 870 Express 28” barrel 12 gage modified choke with a break down carrying case for $219.00 about 5 years ago. It was a deal of a lifetime. Big 5 sporting goods has some good deals every now and then.
This is a nice pump action shotgun. It comes with a 5 shot capacity, counting one in the camber. There are other models in the 870 line. The Express is their bargain model. You can find 870s in 20 gage and they do have 12 gage that will use the new 31/2” round. Mine will accept the 3” round. This gun appears very well made, good fit and finish. The wood was a nice lightly stained hardwood. The finish was parkerized. Overall a fine looking shotgun.
The shotgun is easy to use. The safety is located near the back of the trigger guard, it is a push type. If it is pushed from the right it is on safe, to the left it is off safe. You will see a red mark when it is off safe. To load insert the shells through the load gate into the tube magazine, push them in fully. To put a round in the chamber you pull the action bar lock towards you. The action bar is located in front of the trigger guard. Pull the fore-arm to the rear then push it fore ward. Disengage the safety, make sure you have a safe target pull the trigger, repeat steps until you run out of ammo or your shoulder turns too black and blue to use anymore.
Ok what I am going to write next may bring a tear to your eye so you have been warned. I am sad to say my 870 does not look like it did the day I bought it. Yes I suffer from I can make it better sickness. What I have done is this. I first bought a 20” smooth barrel with rifle sights. This is nice if you are not going to use a shotgun for bird hunting. Then I bought a 7 round magazine extension. After this I had to buy a speed feed stock and fore-end.
This was fine until I tried to install the new fore-end. The wooden fore-end was held on way to tight with the fore-end tube nut. Well I did not have a fore-end tube nut tool, so I got it off the old fashion way. That being said I do not have the nice wooden fore-end any more, I think it ended up as kindling for some fire. So I put it together and all was well for many years. The only problems was that there was play in the fore-end it would spin about ½” around the fore-end tube. I did not see a lot of problem with this. I have a friend who actually had a job as a gunsmith at one time. Unlike me who thinks he can do anything and will try to. He would see me gun and feel the play in the fore-end and say bad words about it. About 2 months ago he saw it again and said you really need to fix it. So I did. What I did was take it apart and examine it. Another friend loaned me the fore-end nut tool and it was a lot easer. What I found out and had forgotten was that the fore-end tube was bent and way out of round. I think I suppressed this memory and I am seeking professional help for it. What I had to do was find a new fore-end tube and nut, easier said then done just a few hours on the old Internet. My order arrived and I went to put it together. Same problem the fore-arm was messed up and would not tighten enough to hold it in the right place. Another few hours on the old Internet and I had a new fore-end on the way. Put it together and it worked. I could not just buy a new fore-end I have to buy a side saddle round holder. This was very easy to install and I did not have any problems.
To whine more after I installed the speed feed stock I decided that I needed a sling. So I installed some mounts. Can any body guess what I did? I know a few of you know what happened. The speed feed holds four rounds on ether side of the stock. Well what happened is I can only hold three now because of the screw I put threw the round holder area.
Hopefully I can help others with my mistakes. All and all this is a great little shot gun that has many uses.
