Primitive but Great!

Primitive is not as bad as it sounds! I belong to a club that does primitive re-enacting. We have Rendezvous just like in the fur trade era including competitions and trading for all! Yes it is great fun, but on to the issue at hand! Camping and the gear associated with! Lets talk about a tent!
A great tent can be built from a cotton or canvas painters tarp! About $15.00 add a little of Central Tractors weather proofing ( a gallon for @ $17.00 ) and you get a great tent cheap! Regular sisal rope with a small rock from the back with the rope ties around will make great ties. You can put it up in several ways! A single pole in the center, which my son prefers or stretch a rope between 2 trees and hang over wedge style. Pull one side up for day time and drop it back for evening! When you are done roll it up like a bed roll and tie around you for easy transporting.
We used one of these tents made from a 9x12 painters tarp for 2 years. When staked down with a center pole it is warm, waterproof, light weight and easy to carry! The down side... Like all tents they will mildew so need to be put away dry! The only limitation is in the creativity of the beholder!
