test edit I am an avid backpacker and have been wandering in the backwoods since I was a kid. Back then, external frame packs were the best thing you could get and I think many people learned to hate backpacking because of these horrible, uncomfortable, and heavy packs.
Things have obviously changed over the years and you can now get a great pack like the Inversion for a few hundred bucks. I've had it for almost four years now and have traveled with it extensively (both backcountry and bus/walking trips through Mexico). I'm not sure what major changes have been made in the four years since I bought this pack, but from glancing at it last time I was in The North Face store in Palo Alto, CA it doesn't look like much has changed.
When I was shopping for a pack, I choose the Inversion because of its many options that would suit it well to both world travel and back-country hiking. I wanted a pack that was large enough for long trips but would easily handle smaller loads using compression straps. I also needed a pack that could stand up to airport baggage handlers, be thrown from a bus roof rack in Mexico, and be beaten up on the trail without breaking it's complex suspension and aluminum frame. So far, this pack has stood up to it all.
The Inversion is full of great features such as a front panel zipper to access your gear quickly, a top loading option, and a removable top that converts to fanny-pack. It also has two external zip pockets that are perfect for holding a water filter and other necessities. In addition, it is extremely adjustable and comfortable for miles.
The only downside I can see with this pack is that when fully loaded, it is very tall and narrow. This is great for me because I am a bit tall and narrow, but for those out there who are shorter than 5'11" or have broad shoulders, this might not be the pack for you.
Overall, this is a great, very durable, versatile pack. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a do-anything pack.
