One Great Handgun (Reply to this comment)
by wildweaselbob
Way back when - The NRA was the disposition agent for surplus 1911 Colt .45 automatics and 1903 Springfields. I bought one of each, paying all of about $17 for the 1911A .45 and about the same for the Springfield. I also picked up a brand new receiver for the .45 and some spare clips. The .45 had little wear and could shoot a tight group. Over the years and a few guns later it remains my favorite and I've never had a jam while using "ball" ammo, which is what it was designed for. In reference to a comment about extended clips; In my opinion, two of two best and cheapest changes you can make to the 1911A .45 (assuming the barrel bushing and receiver are in good shape)is to either buy or make some grips that are thicker than issue, and have an extended heel - I made mine out of some scrap walnut and checkered them, This type of grip can really improve your groups, it also allows for the extended clip, and looks good. note: I made the the thumb and forefinger rests not too thick and in a way that allows me to shoot left or right handed.Hint,if you make your own, tape the sides of the frame and use some clay to get the correct shape for your hand(s). The other "add-on" really worth making is a trigger shoe, and it's cheap. I keep thinking I should put some new sights on it, but as long as I hit what I'm aiming for and my eyes are good I'll wait, besides it really clears the holster smoothly the way it is. As a end note: I would rather carry a 1911A or later model .45 any day over a 9mm, and if I were a bad guy, I would rather be hit by a 9mm any day. (Assume the same bullet design for both - keeping it "apples to apples" for argument sake. However,no argument is desired - each to his's or her's own as they say. ) wildweaselbob

It's amazing... (Reply to this comment)

that this weapon has no real peers even today. I carried the British Forces Browning for some years, and now carry the replacement Beretta 9mm. While I like the Beretta - you can't argue with 15 rounds - the Browning was the boy. Shooting at night was particularly educational. Watching that big fiery pumpkin sail away from you, you just knew that the intended target was keeping his head well outta the way! Great 'view, Wolf.

Browning's design has its place among some of the finest handguns ever created. Even though I'm more of a revolver person, the M1911A1 always appealed to me, especially in its more compact forms. :-) (What can I say... I have smaller hands, and my Detective Special with Pachmayr grips takes up a fairly good portion of them.)

I'm curious... What do you think of the high-capacity M1911A1 clones like the offerings from Para-Ordnance? I've seriously considered getting a P10·45, but the two things that make me think twice about it are the price and concerns over how well I can hold it in my hands...

A friend let me shoot his "tweaked" Colt .45 at a shooting range not too long ago. Basically he made the trigger "tight & sensitive."

It was my first time shooting a large caliber handgun, but it felt good! My shots were grouped in a size less than a ping pong ball on a target about 10 yards away. (Not something to brag about, but that's the best I've ever done with something larger than .22)

I enjoyed the review very much!

... I love running into old friends at epinions. While still on Uncle Sugar's dole I was able to make expert with the 1911 and, even though most of the guys felt it was too heavy and had too much recoil, I actually enjoyed shooting it. A good weapon and a good review.

automatic pistol is the Colt (yes, I mean Colt) Government Model, Gold Cup, or Commander. I know they have quality control issues from time to time and the politics would gag a maggot, but Colt has been building them since the beginning. Along with original Sprgfld Armory, not the one that bought the name. Guess it goes along with being a history buff.

I also like the Colt AR15, especially the SP1 and carbine. Nice handy hard hitting rifles. Glad to find some fellow shooters here.

Great review, and looking for more!

I think its time for a firearms category. But its not very PC,not that am a very PC kind of guy . Think what kind of abuse would show up there. " keeps my hoe in line" or " highly recomended for drive bys"
Matt it wasn`t my pistol that was missing. It was this loser West Pointer that lost it. I found out about 2 years later who`s underware draw it ended up in. This 2 lt was the pits and messed with the wrong spec-4 . As the Lt swung out on the skids of the huey this guy unsnap the flap and flip it out the door. When he hit the ground he grabed it and hid it. That was a peace time fraging. It would take more then a act of congress to make me a gentlmen .

they dont have a section on firearms, because it isn't march. Oh wait a sec, that was when they said that section ought to be added. I thought they meant march of 2000, perhaps I was wrong. Either way, I'm staying here until they finally put one in.

Jerry- 14 bucks? SERIOUSLY?? and this ruined your career? Ridiculous. And that price calculation, how did they ever come up with that? A gun with that kind of history, and stamped US Government would have easily been worth closer to 6 or 700 to a collector.

as for 14 bucks, hey that's 11 bucks more than that scrub patrick kennedy wants to give people at gun buy backs!

Good review, and I'd have to completely agree with Jerry on this, you can have no better designed gun than a 1911 style pistol.Sure, you can get better looking ones, but nothing like this one. Sadly, you can't get mother of pearl or ivory pimp grips for the Para Ordnance variations. YET.

Top three makers for the 1911 in competition shooting- Para, STI and SV, all are great platforms for custom built 1911s. Only bad thing, they'll run you a bit over 14 bucks.
