Cheap fishing weights
Jul 22 '00
If you're an avid Steelheader (or fish any bait in strong, snag-prone waters) I have an idea that'll save you money on lost weights. Spark plugs and old railroad spikes.
You know how bottom fishing in strong currents is: you need heavy weight to hold against the current, but big lead weights get expensive. Invariably, you lose them. Here is a workable solution: collect used spark plugs and old railroad spikes. For the plugs, go to a junkyard that'll let you have broken ones free. Prospect CAREFULLY along railroad grades for the spikes, and use your head. Trains will hurt you.
To fish these inexpensive weights, rig them as drop weights--tie them to a three-way swivel with a leader that is substantially weaker than your main line. When the weight becomes snagged, the relatively weak leader will snap, allowing you to retrieve the rest of your tackle. Also, when a fish strikes, the weight is likely to break free. This permits you to fight the fish without the added risk of the weight snagging on something and breaking off the fish.
Spark plugs are easy to tie on. Railroad spikes may require a hole to be drilled through one end of the spike. An added benefit of these two cheap weights is that, since they don't contain lead, they are non-toxic (clean up oily plugs before using them, obviously). I've used old spark plugs for years while fishing saltwater rockfish along jetties and piers. They've saved me quite a bit of money.
