Kel-Tec makers of the lightest, flattest, self-loading pistols ever produced. I am not going to write about their .32 ACP, because I do not have one. And I would probably never buy one. I belong to the bigger cartridge bigger hole club. This is why I am writing about their great 40 S&W, P-40.
I have owned the P-40 for about 1 year. Here is the run down on the P-40.
Caliber 40 S&W (.40 cal.)
Weight unloaded 16 oz
Magazine capacity 9+1
Length 6
Height 4.3
Width 1
Trigger pull 9lbs
Finish Blued, Parkerized, or Hard Chrome
Construction material Steel, Aluminum and Impact polymer
This little powerhouse is made for one thing, concealed carry. It has no safety. What it does have is a very long double action trigger pull. The trigger pull does take some getting used to and is the worst thing about the gun. I have average size hands. (What ever that is) When I grip this handgun my little finger hangs under the grip. This is not a good thing, but I fixed it. More on that later. I of course bought the hard chrome. Why you may ask did I spend the extra $20 more than a blued model? I have no idea. I am not one for fancy flashy guns. The only added benefit would be when wearing concealed you could have skin to metal contact. The salts in your body can cause havoc with the finish and hard chrome will stand up to more than the blued.
Lets talk about the fun stuff about gun ownership, shooting. Well as I just read on my Kel-Tec email loop, I am a wu$$. (If you are interested in this loop see below for the keltog web page for more information) Yes it is true this gun can cause you pain to shoot it. Let me first say that I have shoot the heck out of my 1911, Sig P220 and an old .357. So I am not inexperienced with hard kicking handguns. What you have is a light auto pistol with a hot round. This has caused me to feel like I sprained my wrist after shooting it. I am not a small guy, 510, 180lb. So what does this means is I do not shoot it a lot. What I do, do is use it for what it is a concealed carry gun. I have shot it enough to hit what I am aiming for, and I continue to shot it to stay proficient.
Of course I had to add a few bells and whistles to the P-40. The Kel-Tec owners web page has all most unlimited resources for upgrade and tweaking your Kel-Tec. While doing research for a concealed carry gun I found it and it help with my decision. Ok, I put a grip extension on my P-40. You have to put them on all your magazines. They are inexpensive. With this in place I got a much better grip on the P-40. And it adds very little to the height overall. I also put a hardball Jr. grip sleeve on. This gives you a few finger grip knots to help with the grip. I also added a belt clip. This fits on the right side of the frame. This is a great way to do the old Mexican carry. It really holds the gun tight in your waistband. I also placed some Ghost sight paint in my 3 dot sights. They do offer tritium night sights from the factory. They have a long list of accessories from Kel-Tec. You can even get a new composite grip in a rainbow of colors.
Overall the P-40 is an inexpensive (under $300) concealable 40 S&W. If you are in the market for a carry gun this should be your first and last stop. If the kick of the P-40 turns you off there is the P-11. The P-11 is their 9mm version. Or I should really say the P-40 is there 40 S&W version of the P-11. The P-40 is 5/32 longer than the P-11. The P-11 has a 10 round magazine. And it is something I will be buying in the future.
