Survival Among Snowgear

Jan 05 '00 (Updated Nov 07 '00)

There is a tremendous amount of products in the snowboarding market and at times it can be very intimidating when trying to decide what products will work for you. Here is some advice on how to narrow your selections down and find the right gear for you.

1. What are your needs? Are you in the market for a snowboard, boots, bindings, and/or outerwear? Prioritize and make sure you get what is essential first. If you have extra money to blow, you can buy the expensive and less crucial items later.

2. Compatibility. Make sure that everything you buy will work together and that they will also work for you. It may seem logical that you would buy step-in boots with step-in bindings, but it doesn't hurt to have a reminder I suppose. Furthermore, not all step-ins will be the same, so you need to find boots and bindings that will go together. That also brings up the important fact that not all strap bindings will work with traditional boots. Just be aware of this fact when purchasing.

3. Durability. Snowboarding is a very aggressive sport and the powerful elements involved can take their toll on your gear. You don't want your stuff falling apart after one season. If they do, hopefully they'll be protected by a warranty of some kind.

4. Warranty. I can't stress this enough in my epinions. This is so important because when a company backs up their products, it helps to relieve that anxiety of not wanting to mess up your equipment. That doesn't mean that you can go thrash your stuff up, but at least if it falls apart on you for no reason, you can always call the maker on it.

5. $. Money is a big factor when buying snowboard gear. A high end setup of board, bindings, and boots can cost from $750-$850. This doesn't even include the $300-$450 you may spend on outerwear and gloves. It's insane. So, if you can wait it out until the season is over, you can buy the years top stuff at a cheaper price.

If you would like more detailed and specific advice on buying certain snowboard equipment, feel free to check out my other epinions or the other great ones by snowboarding epinioners. Have fun spending money and don't forget you also need to buy lift tickets. Rule it!
