should skiers be wearing them?
Dec 03 '99
Four years ago at the top of the Snowbird tram I was accosted by a middle-aged skier dressed in full-contact football gear. He had been standing nearby wearing shoulder guards, helmet, chin strap and knee pads, so I jokingly remarked "nice outfit" and proceeded to snap on my skis.
The man lunged at me spraying like a doomsday fanatic; "It's dangerous out there, MAN! People will HURT you! And there's ROCKS and TREES and no telling what'll happen". Spittle flew from his mouth piece and I could see a shock of neon orange hair jutting from underneath his helmet. I quickly pushed off and could hear him screaming "You better watch out!" over and over until I rounded the corner and POW! I was clobbered blind side by an careening out-of-control Texan. Giant two family yard sale, Special on brains and broken fingers…
Coincidence? I think not.
We wouldn't climb, mountain bike or paraglide without a helmet. Doesn't it seem strange that with skiing, by far our most dangerous sport, we hardly considered it.
Four years later, you bet your sweet ass I wear a bucket in gnarly places like Alaska and on all ski mountaineering descents. Too bad it's not en vogue to wear one at ski areas, but let's hope someday world-wide schizophrenia might kick in and save us all.
