Patagonia Synchilla Jacket: If A Coat Was My Best Friend, This Would Be It!
Written: Jan 03 '01 (Updated Feb 22 '01)
Pros:Lasts Forever
Cons:Pricey but you get what you pay for
The Bottom Line: This Fleece Jacket redefines the whole category.
Patagonia definitely makes the best fleece jacket in the world, period. They call it a Synchilla Jacket.
I have had mine for over 20 years and it is ready to go another 20 with service just as good as when it was new back in 1980. This is my favorite garment. I have hiked in it, climbed mountains in it, slept in it, worn it to church, to school, to the job, swam in it, and been halfway around the world in it and it is still a warm faithful friend. And whenever someone sees that label "Patagonia" on it, it is like the names Ferrari, New York Yankees, or Stradivarius--- you know it's the best.
The one I got was made totally of the Synchilla fleece and though it stays warm it is basically an insulating garment and the wind can pass right through it. I'm wearing it in the picture of me to your left. Hey, it even makes me look rough and rugged and all that good stuff too, huh?
The new ones Patagonia makes now have a barrier cloth inside them that keeps out the cold wind. Last year I bought 3 of these new kind from Patagonia for Christmas for my three kids and now they wear them all the time just like I did my original all-Synchilla model.
If you want the best fleece jacket made by human ingenuity, take a look at Yvon Chouinard's proud little baby. It's been around a long, long time and it's still the best. It may even save your life like it did mine once on the Crestone Needle. Hope you become a believer like me.
