Winds swept the sand from Cadiz Dry Lake to form the low, buff-colored dunes that are the distinctive feature of this Wilderness area. These dunes form a rare habitat for an amazing abundance of flora and fauna. Although the top layer of sand is dry, the underlying layers are moist due to capillary action that coaxes water up from far below. Crickets and other insects live beneath the surface, hunted by the seldom-seen fringe-toed lizard. Blooms of sand verbena, desert lily, and other flowers can be seen. Creosote and burrowood grow here, along with a variety of other perennial shrubs. Seeds from the flowering plants feed kangaroo rats, mice, and other small mammals. Kit foxes, skunks, snakes, owls, and coyotes search for prey at the dunes' edge. |
