Salt = patience

Sep 01 '00

For me there is no question of saltwater or freshwater. It must be saltwater. I have had fish throughout the last twenty years, and have enjoyed , and regretted the saltwater tanks the most. If you do not wish to spend much money on a fish tank, be careful of saltwater tanks. The first time through I spent over $2000 in two years and had nothing to show at the end. It was not the fault of the salt tank, but cost me the same. My main problems were the heat. The first time everything died, the air conditioner quit. The second time the heater stayed on until the fish were cooked. The third time the power went out. Each time I lost around $200/$300 of fish.

I stayed away from fish tanks for around three years. Now I am starting all over with a 110 gallon salt tank, and two 10 gallon freshwater tanks. My first two salt tanks were 55 gallon. I was going all out and was in the process of building my own wet/dry filter. I had $300 of wood and fiberglass made into a water closet. The tanks were going to be filtered into one filter. I had a section made for the algae to grow where the viewer could not see the algae. Algae is actually good for a tank, but looks dirty.

Octipi are the most interesting of the saltwater fish. I have owned three so far. They are also the hardest to keep. Since a Octapus does not have a skeleton the water has to be perfect. As you read above there were three times when my water was not perfect. An Octapus can be hand fed, trained, and fun to watch. I hand fed all three of my octipi except the Blueringed Octapus. One bite from it and you have two hours to get the antidode. Octipi can change colors as their mood changes. They can go through a whole the size of their eye. Octipi have been known to open jars to get at food inside.

Above all Saltwater fish have more color.
